It can be argued whether the night at Grimsby Town on Wednesday, August 28, was Andre Onana’s worst in a Manchester United shirt.

The Cameroonian international has played in more than 300 matches in his senior club career and is an experienced campaigner. Hence, he has featured in many a battle.

However, the ignominy of losing to Grimsby Town, a fourth division club in England, on penalties in the second round of the EFL Cup signalled a new low in the seemingly endless dark phase United are going through.

Andre Onana Error vs Grimsby Town Highlights United’s Decline

Andre Onana error vs Grimsby Town once again brought the spotlight on the goalkeeper’s struggles, as United crashed out of the EFL Cup. Not quite surprisingly, Onana had a role to play in one of the goals United conceded on Wednesday.

Onana has racked up more than 100 appearances for United, but could often have been held responsible for Manchester United’s sufferings during the last couple of seasons. His howlers away at Galatasaray and Lyon caused United to suffer in Europe. He has proven to be a less-than-competent goalkeeper in domestic football as well.

Onana’s inability to hold on to the ball or grab it properly has often made things easy for the opposition attackers.

It was evident yet again against Grimsby Town, as the home side scored their second goal after the Cameroonian failed to punch out the ball from an aerial delivery. The home side then scored from the rebound to compound United’s misery.

Onana then failed to win the tie-breaker for his club, as his counterpart at Grimsby Town had the last laugh. It was one of the Red Devils’ worst-ever defeats in terms of the opposition. Ruben Amorim is fast becoming a liability as a manager of one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Goalkeeper Situation Deplorable at Manchester United

Altay Bayindir, who started as the goalkeeper in both of United’s Premier League matches so far, committed an error against Arsenal as well and remains shaky in his distribution. Bayindir has come up with a few impressive performances here and there, but has not been able to cement his position as the No. 1 goalie on his team yet.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, who could easily have been a solution for United’s goalkeeping predicament, is probably not going to the club either.

In such a situation, Amorim will probably have to continue with Bayindir in the goal, as Onana shows no signs of improvement Like some other areas in the team, Manchester United thus continue to be vulnerable in goal as well.

What is even worse for the 20-time English champions is that there seems to be no silver-lining for them at the moment either. Onana cannot be sold at the moment and Amorim will have to continue with him or Bayindir as his team’s custodian.

As of now, the grim outlook involving the Red Devils sticks out like a sore thumb for their supporters all over the world.
