Arsenal’s Resilience: The Gunners Stretch Their Lead In The Premier League Title Race

Arsenal’s resilience shone through once more as they earned a valuable win over Everton, which will go a long way towards swinging the Premier League title race in their favour.

The Gunners won the match 2-0 with the first goal coming in the 89th minute and the second in injury time.

The two teams looked poised for a draw, but a costly error from Jordan Pickford ensured Arsenal’s resilience got them the win.

Everton had defended commendably before that, but that moment of madness from Pickford spoiled their good work.

Arsenal’s Resilience Swings Premier League Title Race In Their Favour

The Gunners now have 70 points in 31 matches, while, after a draw with West Ham, Manchester City have 61 points from 30.

The Cityzens now have a near-impossible task of erasing the nine-point deficit, albeit with a game in hand.

City will have a chance to have a go at Arsenal in one of their upcoming league matches, but even winning in that may not be enough.

Arsenal had the stroke of luck that the champions typically need in the match against Everton.

For the first goal, Pickford flung himself at a cross played by their substitute, Max Dowman, but failed to get to the ball. Viktor Gyokeres then received the ball and slotted it home to break the deadlock.

Dowman then scored himself from a counter-attack after Everton had thrown all their players into the opposition penalty box in the last minute to score and seal a draw, but it came back to haunt them as the teenager scored, earning Arsenal a 2-0 win.

However, Everton did have chances to get themselves on the scoresheet in the first half as they had a shot hit the post, Riccardo Calafiori made an unbelievable block to deny another, and David Raya made a couple of commendable saves to keep Arsenal afloat.

The Gunners attacked a lot through the inside-right channel with Jurrien Timber, Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz, who kept shifting to the right from the centre-forward’s position.

Their formation often became a 3-4-2-1 from a 4-2-3-1, with Timber moving into the midfield to play as an attacking midfielder alongside Eberechi Eze and Saka playing as the right wing-back and Madueke as the left wing-back.

After Timber went off because of an injury, that threat through the right subsided, and Gabriel Martinelli, who replaced Noni Madueke on the left, made a few forays.

Eze gave Everton some trouble whenever he had the ball inside the opposition half with enough time and space.

However, Everton did well to almost always engage a man to deal with Arsenal’s attacking midfielder whenever he had the ball inside their half.

The visitors made a lot of blocks and interceptions while defending deep, but all the good work was nullified by Pickford in the 89th minute.

Mikel Arteta’s men thus got an unexpected favour from England’s number one as they got the job done to extend their gap in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal Have A Couple Of Key Matches Coming Up

The Gunners will play Bayer Leverkusen in the return leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie at the Emirates Stadium in midweek, and after that, they will take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Final.

Arsenal will not play another Premier League match until April 11, but Arsenal’s resilience got them the win on Saturday and helped them take another huge step in the Premier League title race.

However, as the somewhat fortunate Arsenal win against Everton suggested, they might be destined to win the English top division title this time around.
