Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Wales: Three Observations From Bosnia’s Penalty Win Over Wales

Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Wales saw Bosnia come out on top as they defeated Wales on penalties in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Play-offs.

The Balkan nation hopes to reach only their second ever major tournament as an independent country after the 2014 World Cup.

In this article, we bring you three major observations from the Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Wales match.

Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Wales: When It Matters Most, Edin Džeko Scores For The National Team

Even at age 40, the greatest goalscorer in the history of the Bosnian national team still comes up with important goals for the Dragons.

Bosnia seemed down and out of the World Cup Play-Off semi-final, before their captain rescued them with an 86th-minute equaliser.

The fact that the team can still count on his leadership is an important observation of the Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Wales match.

As different as they are as players, Džeko has many similarities to Luka Modrić, who at the same age also continues to perform for Croatia, another former Yugoslav country.

They both embody great sportsmanship and are both icons of the beautiful game in the same area of the world.

Džeko has now scored 73 goals for Bosnia in 147 internationals appearances.

He has recently sacrificed a much more glamorous contract, when he left Fiorentina in January, to join Schalke 04 in the second tier of German football.

A key reason for doing so must have been to keep himself fit for the national team, so he can help them like he did on Thursday.

Indeed, since he arrived at Schalke, Džeko has scored six goals and provided three assists in eight appearances for the Bundesliga 2 side.

Bosnia Were Lucky Against Wales, But Luck Has To Be Earned As Well

As they won on penalties, and their opponents hit the woodwork twice in normal time, it is fair to say that the side led by captain Džeko were lucky to come out on top in the Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Wales match. However, they earned that luck.

They did so with relentless tactical discipline and a refusal to give up. The saying that “fortune favours the brave” very much rings true here.

120 minutes in front of a hostile Cardiff crowd did not intimidate coach Sergej Barbarez’s team; it motivated them.

They equalised late in regulation, despite having been down through much of the second half, and ultimately, they triumphed on spot kicks.

All of this happened even though striker Ermedin Demirović missed his team’s first penalty, and that takes determination as well as nerves.

Bosnia showed all that and more on Thursday night, so despite being lucky to have won, they also earned it.

The “Bad News”: Italy Stands Between Bosnia And The 2026 World Cup

Despite all the positive emotions that their fans have felt as a result of the Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Wales game, they will know that only half of the job of these World Cup Play-Offs has been done.

Between them and a place at this summer’s World Cup stands none other than four-time world champions Italy.

However, with home advantage on their side, they have nothing to lose.

After all, if Italy don’t qualify for the World Cup, it would be a disaster for them, while for Bosnia, not qualifying would be the norm.
