The Phil Foden England team selection is now under a cloud, as the Manchester City midfielder continues his underwhelming run for the Three Lions. As of now, Foden has only four goals in 48 international matches.
Foden will turn 26 in May, and at this age, he should be in his pomp. However, since winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in the 2023/24 season, Foden’s form has gone downwards for both club and country.
Phil Foden England Team Selection Under Doubt With Stiff Competition
There is strong competition for the place of the England No.10 role, with Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers also being in contention. Foden started in the match against Uruguay as the No.10 in a 4-2-3-1, but his performance left a lot to be desired.
The set-up in the English national team seems to be ideal for the Englishman. He usually plays alongside Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford, who are adept at playing short passes, as is Harry Kane, the usual No.9.
Foden plays his club football under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, who is famous for professing a style of football containing plethora of short passes. It requires the No. to combine with either of the wingers and the centre-forward through short and quick passes in the final third.
Hence, it should not be much of a problem for Foden to gel well with his teammates in the English national team, nor has there been any shortage of opportunities for him. However, his return of four goals in 48 international matches has put a question mark on the Phil Foden England team selection for the upcoming World Cup in June.

Is Foden’s Current Form Good Enough the World Cup?
Purely on current form, Foden probably does not get selected for the World Cup squad. Each of Palmer and Rogers is in a better form than Foden this season. Foden enjoyed an excellent but brief run of form late in 2025 – his numbers for the Cityzens would have been even worse if not for that run.
Palmer has scored 10 goals for Chelsea in 25 matches, while Foden has needed 41 matches to reach the same tally of goals for Manchester City. Rogers, too, has 10 goals for Villa, but his assist count is higher than that of Foden. Eberechi Eze is also on the fray with nine goals in 41 matches for Arsenal this season.
Rogers has been one of the best players for Aston Villa and is currently the favorite to start as the England No.10. Unless he does something outstanding over the remainder of the season, the Phil Foden England team selection should be difficult ultimately.
England have the precedent of leaving star players out of the World Cup in the past. Paul Gascoigne was left out of the squad for the 1998 World Cup by Glenn Hoddle. The same might be repeated this time around, as Thomas Tuchel has shown that he could be ruthless in his team selection by dropping Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the recent past.
It remains to be seen whether Foden’s form improves considerably. Unless that does not happen soon enough, the Phil Foden team selection might prove to be very difficult, despite his reputation as a player.
