The West Ham United relegation from the Premier League came as a major shock to all its supporters, as it was confirmed on the final day of the season, despite their 3-0 win over Leeds United. However, as Tottenham Hotspur beat Everton 1-0, West Ham suffered the much-dreaded relegation.
West Ham United finished with 39 points and Tottenham with 41; thus, the West Ham United relegation was confirmed, much to the disappointment of Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.
The Hammers will now play in the Championship, which will be a downgrade for the wonderful London Stadium, their home ground.
West Ham United Relegation: Poor Form Put Them In Danger
West Ham suffered three defeats in their last five matches, meaning that even when the threat of relegation loomed large over them, they could not lift their performance.
The win against Leeds was a desperate rearguard action from them, playing with two strikers from the second half onwards and reaping the benefits.
However, it was too little, too late and staying up in the Premier League was no longer in West Ham’s hands by the time they took the pitch for their last match. Jarrod Bowen, West Ham’s star right-winger, finished yet another season with his tally of goals reaching double digits.
Bowen scored 11 goals in 42 matches this season, which took his tally to 85 goals in 280 matches for the Hammers. Taty Castellanos also found the net against Leeds, which was only his sixth goal of the season from 21 matches.
West Ham did not have a great defensive performance either. They conceded 65 goals in the season, which is the third-highest for any team in the Premier League. They have players like Axel Disasi and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who have played for big teams like Chelsea and Manchester United, respectively, but that did not seem to serve the purpose.

West Ham United Relegation: Players On The Move
Players like Bowen, Disasi and Wan-Bissaka will try to move out from the club in all probability, as players of their calibre will quite naturally want to play in the Premier League next season.
Then there is Mateus Fernandes, who is reportedly under the radar of Manchester United. The Portuguese midfielder is another player who is likely to leave West Ham ahead of the next season, whichever his destination might be.
That means that the Hammers will have to rebuild for the upcoming season and then try to fight their way out of the Championship. They were last relegated back in 2010, and since then, it has been a 14-year-long continuous run for them in the Premier League after they were promoted back into the top-flight.
It also remains to be seen whether West Ham are able to keep Nuno Espirito Santo as their manager. The Portuguese manager might not be ready to manage at a tier below and might seek his way out.
Overall, the West Ham United relegation has come as a catastrophe for the club in general, and it will take a lot of hard work for them to return to the Premier League. Only time will tell whether they will be able to do so next season against the odds.
