The Uruguay World Cup exit happened after their 0-1 loss in the Uruguay vs Spain group stage match in Guadalajara on Friday, June 26. Marcelo Bielsa’s men finished with only two points from three matches and exited the tournament.

It was an ordinary display over the course of three matches that signalled the Uruguay World Cup exit. The two-time world champions went out with left-winger Maximiliano Araujo probably being the only player who impressed in the tournament.

Uruguay World Cup Exit Is Their Second Successive One in the Group Stages

The golden generation of Uruguay, consisting of the likes of Luis Suarez, Diego Forlan and Diego Godin, reached the semi-finals of World Cup 2010 and then the quarter-finals of World Cup 2018. It was a revival of sorts in the fortunes of a once-rich footballing nation.

However, Uruguay‘s last two World Cup campaigns have been distinctly average. In the Uruguay vs Spain match, the Spaniards did not exactly set the ground on fire with their performance, but Uruguay did very little to exert their presence.

The goal they conceded in the Uruguay vs Spain match was the result of an error by Fernando Muslera, a goalkeeper who played in both the 2010 and 2018 World Cups, when the Uruguayans impressed. Bielsa’s men had enough time to equalise, and they looked too inept at times to do so.

Darwin Nunez was frequently caught in the offside trap, and a midfield three consisting of Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur and Manuel Ugarte, each of whom plays for a top European club, did little to aid their attack.

Ugarte’s injury was a blessing in disguise for Uruguay, as his replacement, Nicolas De La Cruz, showed better control and poise in the holding midfielder’s role. However, it was not enough to test the Spanish defence.

Only after Bielsa introduced an attacking left-back to complement Araujo through the left side, did the Uruguayans looked a better attacking outfit. However, Spain still managed to hold on to their lead, and Cabo Verde’s draw with Saudi Arabia in another match took them through to the round of 16 instead of Uruguay.

Will Bielsa Remain on the Job?

Argentine Bielsa is one of the oldest managers in world football and might not remain the Uruguay manager after his team’s dismal performance at the World Cup. There needs to be some soul-searching as well.

For example, a player like Valverde, who is a star player for a club as big as Real Madrid, is expected to do better than he has while playing for the national team. His work rate for his club is distinctly different from that for his country.

Muslera is 40 at the moment and has earned 137 caps for his country, but there is not enough competition for him for the place of the No.1 goalkeeper for the national team. Nunez, who last scored for Uruguay in 2024, still gets to the starting XI inexplicably.

The Uruguay World Cup exit should prompt their football authorities to look for solutions to the above issues. Their supporters, however, have very little to console themselves with.
