Liverpool’s Premier League 2026/27 season can only be a success if Iraola manages to find the synergy and, even before that, the correct combination. Liverpool have not yet been able to sign any player to replace Mohamed Salah, and hence, the concerns remain for them ahead of the new Premier League season.
Liverpool’s Premier League 2026/27 Season: What Will Be The Ideal Combination For Them?
Getting the starting XI right will go a long way towards determining the fate of Liverpool’s Premier League 2026/27 season. The Reds only have Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, Alexander Isak, Ryan Gravenberch, Milos Kerkez and Dominik Szoboszlai in their squad at the moment, who are virtually sure of getting a start if physically fit.
Liverpool might have to start with Rio Ngumoha on the right flank to fill in for Salah despite that not being the youngster’s preferred position. Ngumoha is not even 18 yet and has played in only 30 matches for the Reds; however, Liverpool’s Premier League 2026/27 season might be a breakthrough one for him.
The options on the left wing are in plenty, and Iraola might have to choose between Florian Wirtz, Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike to start on the left flank. Wirtz might get a place in the central midfield as well, but, should he do so, the Reds might then have to start without Alexis Mac Allister, with Gravenberch being the only defensive midfielder, which could make them vulnerable defensively.
Iraola will also have to take a call regarding his team’s defence in Liverpool’s Premier League 2026/27 season. Ronald Araujo has arrived on loan and should form a physically imposing centre-back duo with Van Dijk. However, the Uruguayan centre-back might take some time to adjust to the high pace of the Premier League.

Araujo has had the habit of making those recovery runs while playing in a high defensive line for Barcelona. Hence, the pace of the Premier League might not be a problem for him after all. However, Barca used to dominate ball possession, which means that Araujo hardly ever had to play against sustained pressure from the opposition team. This is something he will have to do more often while playing for Liverpool, who are likely to play more direct football under Iraola and spend a considerable time without the ball in a match, especially against other big teams.
Liverpool also have Jeremy Jaquet as an option as the centre-back, but he is only 21, and Iraola might not want to expose him too often, too early. Hence, Van Dijk and Araujo are likely to be the centre-back duo for Liverpool’s Premier League 2026/27 season, at least in the initial phases.
Iraola will be given time to make his influence felt, but will know too well that the minimum benchmark for him will be to ensure participation in the 2027/28 UEFA Champions League. Winning the title in his debut season at the club, just like his predecessor, Arne Slot, will only be a bonus, but it remains to be seen whether the 44-year-old Spaniard manages to achieve that objective in Liverpool’s Premier League 2026/27 season.
