The Manchester United formation has been 4-2-3-1 for quite some time now, aside from a major chunk of Ruben Amorim’s tenure, when the Portuguese manager shifted to a 3-4-3. However, the Manchester United formation was revived to a 4-2-3-1 once Michael Carrick took charge of the team in January 2026 as interim and now as permanent head coach.
The Manchester United formation has been helped by the fact that they probably have the best No.10 in the Premier League in Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes’ tendency to deliver assists in a prolific manner is the reason why Carrick has stuck to that formation.
Manchester United Formation: Why it Should be Altered Against Weaker Teams?
The Manchester United formation needs to change when they play against weaker teams, who are likely to employ a low block against them, as Hull did last weekend to beat Manchester United 2-0.
In that match, both Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos stayed near the half line for the majority of the time they were on the pitch, maintaining the 4-2-3-1 formation strictly.
However, that was probably not the approach they needed. They needed more numbers upfront, as it was clear that their ploy of playing crosses into the Hull penalty box was not working against Hull’s five-man defence.
Had Carrick decided to change the Manchester United formation to a 4-1-4-1 by asking Tielemans to be upfront more frequently, it probably would have worked for his team. Tielemans and Fernandes could have attacked the Hull City defence more by running down the middle with the ball.
This is something Man United will need more often against low blocks, and Tielemans has the passing ability to make the ploy work.

It will also give Fernandes more passing options. The Portuguese has a tendency to veer towards the right side to play crosses into the box. If he moves to the side and finds an onrushing Tielemans in his passing range more often, it will be good for him as well.
It will, however, need the other defensive midfielder to be able to shield the defence properly. Carlos Baleba could prove to be quite handy in that respect with his physicality.
Hence, the Red Devils could think of going into their next match against Ipswich Town, another promoted side, with Tielemans and Baleba in the double pivot and giving the former the license to attack more freely.
Manchester United simply cannot afford to drop more points in the match against Ipswich Town, as they will have Manchester City waiting for them in the middle of September. That is going to be their first match of the season against a big team and hence, collecting the full points from the Ipswich Town match remains critical for them.
It now remains to be seen whether the Manchester United formation is changed in the upcoming matches against lesser teams. It also remains to be seen whether Baleba gets more chances to make his presence felt by allowing Tielemans or Kobbie Mainoo to play in a more advanced role.
As of now, a possible tweak in the Manchester United formation should be the priority in Michael Carrick’s mind.
