After a two-week international break, the Premier League season returned to full swing last week with Premier League Matchday 6.

Premier League Matchday 6 began Saturday, October 10, with Arsenal overcoming a 1-0 second-half deficit to beat Leeds United 2-1. It concluded on Monday with Coventry City getting a huge 4-1 home win against Newcastle United. Manchester City remain the only team to have won all their games this season and still lead the Premier League by three points.

With teams returning from the international break, Premier League Matchday 6 showed which teams benefited and which still have issues. From high-scoring games to great team performances, here are my biggest takeaways from Premier League Matchday 6.

Three Key Takeaways From Premier League Matchday 6

1. Manchester City Make A Huge Statement At Liverpool Despite Turmoil

Although the Premier League was on pause for two weeks, Manchester City still made big headlines during the international break after the Premier League found them guilty of 114 of 115 financial breaches.

Despite looming punishment and widespread criticism from the soccer world, the team didn’t let it deter them, and they got a huge result against Liverpool in Premier League Matchday 6 to keep themselves at the top of the Premier League table.

This was an impressive win for Manchester City, as they dominated Liverpool in the second half in a hostile environment after going into halftime 0-0. Despite Liverpool receiving a second yellow card for Ryan Gravenberch in the 60th minute, leaving them with 10 men, Manchester City held strong defensively before the red card, with Liverpool’s expected goals at 0.42 compared to Manchester City’s 0.07 at halftime.

Additionally, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma kept his team in it, making five saves before the red card.

After the red card, Manchester City took full advantage, showing how clinical it was by scoring three goals from its next three shots on target after having only one. In the end, Manchester City finished with 65% possession and a higher expected goals total, handing Liverpool their first loss of the season.

While Liverpool missed a golden opportunity to get their first big result under Andoni Iraola, Manchester City showed champion-like resilience, surviving Liverpool’s first-half momentum, staying composed in the hostility, and pulling away in the second half.

It remains to be seen what punishment Manchester City will face, as it could range from losing its Premier League titles and points deductions to expulsion from the league. It certainly won’t be easy for Enzo Maresca and the players to keep playing with so much uncertainty regarding the team’s future.

However, Sunday’s result on Premier League Matchday 6 sent a clear message to the league: Manchester City is ready to face the hostility and still compete at a high level, no matter the off-field scrutiny.

2. Michael Carrick’s Days As Manchester United’s Manager Are Numbered

Manchester United didn’t get off to a great start to the season before the international break, recording their worst start in Premier League history: five points in five games.

Man United seemed on the way to stability in Premier League Matchday 6, as they hosted a winless Tottenham side that took five matches to score its first goal of the season. Instead, Manchester United left with a hugely disappointing draw, putting more pressure on Michael Carrick’s hot seat.

Manchester United looked lifeless in attack as Carrick’s starting lineup failed to threaten in the first half against a Tottenham defence that had allowed eight goals. In the first half, they had an expected goal rate of 0.05 compared to Tottenham’s 0.96, with only one shot on target.

Tottenham continued to threaten at the start of the second half, and Carrick didn’t make changes until the 59th minute, with a triple substitution. The change worked, as United threatened more in attack before Bryan Mbeumo’s 73rd-minute goal broke the deadlock. This frustrated Tottenham enough that Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off in the 78th minute after a heavy challenge.

It looked like Manchester United were on track for a win on Premier League Matchday 6, but Carrick’s tactics failed again as Tottenham tied the game in stoppage time, making it the second time this season the team has failed to win with a man advantage.

Despite being a man down, Tottenham were more dangerous in attack as they looked for an equaliser. They finally converted when United’s defence was woeful: Lisandro Martinez failed to mark Dominic Solanke on a cross from Sandro Tonali, allowing him to get a glancing header on goal.

This forced Carrick to use his remaining subs to avoid embarrassment, but it was too late. In the end, despite being a man down, Tottenham deserved a result against Manchester United, as they were the better team. They had a higher expected goals rate (1.56), created more big chances, and had more possession before the red card.

Man United look like a team with no identity, sitting 13th after Premier League Matchday 6 and having run out of the magic that helped them finish third last season.

Things won’t get easier for this team, as they have to play two Champions League matches this month, along with three Premier League games. Carrick needs to deliver results quickly, or the team may have no choice but to sack him if this season continues to unravel for Manchester United.

3. Brighton & Hove Albion Are Dark Horses In The Premier League Title Race

In a season where many teams outside Arsenal entered with questions due to many changes, Brighton & Hove Albion have been among the Premier League’s biggest surprises, sitting third with 13 points. Now, after three consecutive wins and clean sheets, Brighton is a dark horse in the title race with Arsenal and Manchester City after Premier League Matchday 6.

Brighton carried over momentum from beating Arsenal 3-0 before the international break with a gritty win over Sunderland in Premier League Matchday 6, after being reduced to 10 men in the 57th minute.

Despite facing a Sunderland side with only one win in its first five games of the season, Brighton had to fight hard for this win, as the first half ended evenly, with both teams recording almost identical expected goal rates. Maxim De Cuyper finally broke through in the 53rd minute, but four minutes later Brighton were reduced to 10 men after a lengthy VAR review, forcing them to play the rest of the game a man down.

However, the team showed resilience, holding strong defensively to win 2-0. Fabian Hurzeler pulled the right buttons after going down a man, making three defensive substitutions to hold on to the lead. This kept Brighton defensively structured as Sunderland dominated possession but rarely threatened to score.

As time ran out for Sunderland to score, they were exposed on the counterattack, and that’s exactly what happened: Jaouen Hadjam scored a stoppage-time goal on a counterattack to clinch the win for Brighton. In the end, Brighton finished with a higher expected goals rate, more shots on goal, and more big chances created despite being outpossessed and a man down.

After Premier League Matchday 6, Brighton’s identity is clear: they’re among the league’s most dangerous teams. They are the league’s high-scoring team with 18 goals, tied with three teams for the fewest goals conceded at five, and well-balanced, with 10 different players scoring in the Premier League.

It remains to be seen whether this holds up as the season progresses. Still, if Brighton keep creating chances, defend with discipline, and take points off the league’s top sides, they could stay in the title conversation longer than many expected.

Extra Time Notes

While it might still be early in the Premier League season, Arsenal should be the favourites to repeat as champions after Premier League Matchday 6, despite being in second place. With Manchester City’s looming punishment, the two-horse race has become a one-horse race, as teams outside Arsenal and Manchester City have struggled to find consistency.

Manchester City will most likely receive a severe punishment despite their appeal, which will essentially knock them out of the title race. The only team that could challenge Arsenal’s bid to repeat right now is Brighton, as they have been the most consistent and the only team to beat Arsenal.

Heavyweight teams like Chelsea and Liverpool face many problems, from defensive fragilities to a lack of attacking creativity. Mikel Arteta went into the season as the only manager to have won the Premier League, and his familiarity with the league and his squad’s chemistry are paying off as Arsenal show no signs of slowing down.

However, the Premier League has repeatedly shown that the unexpected is always possible, as Matchday 6 proved. Chelsea, for example, showed signs of improvement on Premier League Matchday 6, winning their first Premier League game by more than a goal, suggesting that adjustments made during the international break could help them build momentum. Arsenal may look like the team to beat, but with plenty of soccer still to play, it is too early to call the title race over.
