After returning from a knee injury, the Johan Manzambi form has allowed Aston Villa to point in the right direction once more, as the Swiss international has been a key midfield figure for them, allowing the Villans to gain back control in the middle of the park and chip in with key goal contributions to guide them to important victories.
Poised for a move to Newcastle United in the summer, Aston Villa hijacked the move and secured the services of the 21-year-old for a club-record deal worth up to £59.5 million. His performances at the 2026 World Cup put his name firmly on the map for many teams around Europe, but the Villans were able to secure his services due to boasting the luxury of playing UEFA Champions League football.
Whilst he returned from injury at the start of September, it has only recently been that the Johan Manzambi form has taken an upward trajectory, with three goals and three assists from his last four matches in all competitions. After scoring his first UEFA Champions League goal in Aston Villa’s 6-0 midweek thrashing of Fenerbahce, the Johan Manzambi form was backed up with his match-winner against Newcastle United.
With that being said, it is key to point out that Unai Emery has been deploying the Swiss international in a more offensive attacking midfield role, rather than his preferred central midfield or defensive midfield role that he was used to playing at Freiburg. The real question is: has this change in position unlocked the potential of the 21-year-old, and are we set to see the Johan Manzambi form to continue in a positive vein?
Johan Manzambi Form: The Benefit Of Having The 21-Year-Old As The Attacking Midfielder
The attacking midfielder role is not completely new to Manzambi, as the midfielder had to fill in that position whilst Yuito Suzuki was injured, and he managed to perform well in the role. Last season in the Bundesliga, Manzambi managed five goals and five assists from 27 matches, with one goal and three assists coming from attacking midfield.
In all four of his starts for Aston Villa this season, Emery has utilised him in the number 10 role, and up to this point, it has paid dividends with the Swiss midfielder getting a goal contribution in every game. The Johan Manzambi form has seen him become a cog in Unai Emery’s Aston Villa machine, as the 21-year-old boasts the most goal contributions (four) in the Premier League for the Villans.
Even after missing the opening three league matches, it feels as if the return of Manzambi from injury has impacted the Villans in a positive manner. Four starts, four games without a defeat, which includes back-to-back clean sheets, marking the first time it has happened in the UEFA Champions League and Premier League this season.
With just over 250 minutes played in the Premier League so far, the Johan Manzambi form sees him lead the way in the match rating statistics, with a 7.66 average over the last four matches, putting him 0.6 of a rating in front of his closest outfield challenger, Boubacar Kamara.
Due to his attacking strengths, the Johan Manzambi form has him at the top of pretty much every attacking stat, like goals per 90, xG per 90, shots on target per 90, and even shots per 90. In the recent fixture against Newcastle United, he scooped the Man of the Match award, with his goal being the winner for the Villans.
Even with his goal being the winner, Manzambi had a quiet game, with his goal being the only shot on target for the Villans. The whole game saw only four shots on target, and a game that, on paper and from the stats, was an evenly matched contest that was decided by a player who is on a fantastic run of form.

Extra Time Notes
The Johan Manzambi form has continued in good vein after an impressive 2026 World Cup campaign. The midfielder has returned from injury and hit the ground running for his new club, with a goal contribution in each of his four starts since his return from a knee problem that curtailed his 2026 World Cup campaign.
In addition to that, Emery is deploying him as a more attacking midfielder, which has allowed the Swiss international to stretch his legs and get in goal-scoring opportunities. With 4.9 shots per 90 and seven chances created, the Johan Manzambi form has allowed the 21-year-old to be an influential figure in the Villans’ return to winning ways.
With three wins from their last four competitive matches, Aston Villa look a huge threat with Manzambi in their side. After losing the likes of Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers from the midfield, it was always going to be a tough task for them to be replaced, but with the signing of Manzambi, Aston Villa has a strong, young and creative midfielder that has slotted into the squad with relative ease.
