AS Roma vs AC Milan Match Preview

AS Roma returns home for their all-Italian UEFA Europa League quarterfinal decider against AC Milan, having prevailed 1-0 at the San Siro last week.

The Giallorossi have been excellent in Europe over the last few years, making at least the semifinals for the last three years. The losing Europa League finalists from May will be looking to make it four continental semifinals on the spin.

Excluding last weekend’s abandoned match, Roma has gone unbeaten in their last four games – winning three of those games – since losing to Brighton in the round of 16 return leg. With this in mind, they are in excellent form heading into Thursday’s second game.

Despite defeating Roma in both of their Serie A meetings this term, Milan was beaten last Thursday, ending a seven-game winning streak across all competitions. A weekend draw at struggling Sassuolo will do little to help with their confidence. Not all hope is lost for Rossoneri, who could make successive continental semifinals for the first time in 17 years.

AS Roma vs AC Milan Prediction

Roma win at 2.80, Roma to advance at 1.35

Roma’s matches at the Stadio Olimpico in UEFA club competition is almost always ends in their favour. In the knockout rounds, it is even more automatic. The last time Roma lost at home in the knockout round of a UEFA club competition was eight years ago against Villarreal (20 games ago). Pulling off a comeback of this sort would be highly impressive from Milan.

With that said, Stefano Pioli’s Milan side has enjoyed success on their travels of late. They are unbeaten in their last five games outside of the San Siro, with their last reverse coming in this competition against Rennes in the knockout round playoffs. They also won away to Roma in the Serie A this term, though this match is arguably a more arduous task.

AS Roma vs AC Milan Tips

Over 2.5 goals at 1.90

While the first leg only featured one goal, expect to see some more on Thursday night. That match is the only one in Milan’s last six games not to see more than 2.5 goals scored.

On the contrary, Roma has kept clean sheets in their last four completed matches, with none of those games featuring more than one goal. That makes for an interesting matchup, where Milan knows they have to break down Daniele De Rossi’s stubborn defence at least once. That will not be an easy task for them, as last week showed. Nevertheless, expect to see some goals on Thursday at the Stadio Olimpico.
