Bundesliga Goalscoring Record: Free-Scoring Bayern Munich Within Touching Distance Of 54-Year Record

The Bundesliga goalscoring record is in sight for Bayern Munich, with 27 of the 34 rounds of German Bundesliga matches played, and with the league leaders having scored 97 goals so far, it seems inevitable that the Bavarians will break their own all-time Bundesliga goalscoring record from the 1971/72 season, which was 101 goals.

The All-Time Bundesliga Goalscoring Record About To Be Broken: What It Says About The Bayern Munich Attack

Before this season began, we asserted that Bayern Munich would need to rediscover their killer instinct in front of goal to have a good year.

Even as early as it still is now, we can clearly say that on this note alone, they have already more than delivered.

Once they break the Bundesliga goalscoring record from the early 1970s, this Bayern team will forever go down in history as one of the greatest attacking sides that have ever graced the elite football pitches in the country.

As fantastic as Harry Kane has been this season, both in the goalscoring department and beyond it, not all the praise for the about-to-be-broken Bundesliga goalscoring record should go to him. Luis Diaz, Michael Olise, and really the entire squad of outfield players have played their part.

Kane obviously is above and beyond anyone in the league, and indeed most of Europe, when it comes to putting the ball into the back of the net.

However, he does so much more than that.

The number nine draws defenders onto himself, freeing up space for his teammates, contributes assists, and even helps in the build-up.

It is truly amazing that despite the other work he does for the team, he is still somewhat realistically chasing Robert Lewandowski’s 2021 all-time individual Bundesliga goalscoring record.

It says a lot about Bayern’s current attack that even the great teams of the past, particularly in the early years of this decade, fell short of the 101 Bundesliga goal mark set in 1972, while the current side will likely exceed it with several matches to spare.

The Vincent Kompany Effect

When Bayern do finally break the Bundesliga goalscoring record, much of the praise for doing so will go to coach Vincent Kompany.

He is now heading towards the end of his second year with the Bavarians, and we can clearly see that he has brought their play to another level, both offensively and defensively.

The Belgian tactician has found a way to bring this notoriously difficult group of players on his side and keep them, as well as the front office of the club, believing in him.

That is something that no other coach since the 2016 departure of Pep Guardiola has managed to achieve.

However, in many people’s eyes, that will not be enough unless and until Bayern return to success on the European stage.

The Desire For Champions League Success

Of course, Bayern Munich are held to an unfair standard when it comes to measuring their success.

Even Guardiola had many critics in Munich, despite winning three Bundesliga titles, two German Cups, and reaching the Champions League semi-finals every season during his three-year reign.

The problem was that he never took Bayern further than the last four in the Champions League.

The fact that the Bavarians are taking on Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of this season’s UEFA Champions League, meaning they might well exit the competition, brings with it the risk that this amazing season so far will be looked at as a failure as a result.

Breaking the Bundesliga goalscoring record is no small task, as it hasn’t been done since 1972, but failure in winning the UEFA Champions League could dampen the success of breaking that record.
