The Bayern Munich goalkeeper injuries have piled up; it is yet another crisis that the club find themselves in.

As fans of the Bavarians have sadly had to get used to, over the last few seasons in particular, there is an injury epidemic going on at the club around springtime, which also coincides with the decisive weeks and months of the season.

This year, the problem so far has been the Bayern Munich goalkeeper injuries in particular.

The Bayern Munich Goalkeeper Injuries: All Top Four Keepers At The Club Sidelined

This season, the problems surrounding the Bayern Munich goalkeeper injuries are so extreme that they would almost, in a cynical way, be funny if they weren’t so serious.

First-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is making progress after his calf muscle injury, yet a return between the sticks for Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second leg tie against Atalanta would still be too early for him.

Neuer’s back-up, Jonas Urbig, suffered a concussion just before the final whistle of the first leg in Italy. Whether or not Urbig can recover in time for Wednesday is an open question.

Meanwhile, in Saturday’s eventful 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen, third-string goalie Sven Ulreich made his first competitive appearance in a long time, and worsened the Bayern Munich goalkeeper injuries situation by tearing a muscle in his right adductor, as the club announced Sunday.

Ulreich finished the Leverkusen game, but will naturally not be available for the time being.

The nominal number one goalkeeper of Bayern Munich’s reserves, Leon Klanac, has been out injured for some time himself, making the number of Bayern Munich goalkeeper injuries an incredible four.

Lucky Number Five? Who Is Leonard Prescott?

That brings us to the next in line, 16-year-old, New York-born Leonard Prescott, who is an under-17 Germany international.

He would be by far the youngest keeper to play in a Bayern Munich senior competitive match, as the current record holder in that department is Sven Scheuer, who was 18 years and 237 days old when he made his debut for the club in a European Cup victory vs Rangers in 1989.

Huge First Leg UEFA Champions League Lead

If things continue as they are, and Bayern do have to rely on Prescott in goal on Wednesday, the Bavarians at least have a five-goal advantage and their familiar home ground to fall back on.

It certainly is a very solid foundation for reaching the next round, but miracles do happen in football, from time to time.

The Bayern Munich goalkeeper injuries certainly make such a “miracle” more likely, rather than less so.

However, if it is Prescott between the sticks, then he will, of course, work with an experienced back four, which will surely do all in its power to protect the young keeper.

The Bayern Munich Goalkeeper Injuries: A Solid Lead To Protect

The situation that Bayern are in is quite solid, despite all the injuries.

They have a nine-point lead in the Bundesliga, a five-goal advantage in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, and are a semi-final win at Leverkusen away from a German Cup final.

However, this does mean that die Roten also have a lot to lose, and that’s why there can be no letting up, regardless of the current injuries in the squad.
