Every year, the newly promoted teams bring a plethora of fresh talent to the Premier League. With Norwich, Brentford and Watford confirmed for next season, here are a few Championship players we cannot wait to watch in the Premier League.
Promoted Players Looking to Impress
Players to Watch Out For
Ivan Toney
Brentford finally got promoted from the Championship after ten years of trying and Ivan Toney played a big part in it. The mercurial forward contributed 41 goals in the 3,850 minutes that he played in the Championship this season. Having signed from Peterborough United for a mere £5 million, Toney has turned out to be a bargain. The Englishman was signed to replace last season’s Player of the Year in Ollie Watkins ( who joined Aston Villa and was in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the Euros) and has done so quite brilliantly. Toney, who narrowly missed the Championship Player of the season himself, had a goal contribution of 0.96 per 90 almost double that of Watkins’. The former Newcastle striker also broke the Championship record for most goals in a season with 31 goals. It will be a treat to watch another pacey forward in the Premier League, who has climbed through the many rugs of English football!
Emiliano Buendia
Championship Player of the Season, the Argentinian Emiliano Buendia set the league on fire. With 15 goals and 15 assists this season, the former Getafe player was by far the best player in the league this season.
Part of the talented Norwich attack, which consists of talents like Teemu Pukki and Todd Cantwell, Buendia really stood out. He is the only player in the top five leagues and Championship to score and assist 15 plus goals this season. Not even Lionel Messi has done that this season. Heavily linked with a move to Arsenal next season, it has now been confirmed that Aston Villa has won the race for the tricky playmaker in a club-record capture.
Ismalia Sarr
Watford’s record signing, Ismalia Sarr is best known for ending Liverpool‘s unbeaten run last season. The young Senegalese is an exciting prospect and has shown that this season. With 13 goals and four assists in 3459 minutes in the Championship, he was one of Watford’s most important players as they returned to the Premier League first time of asking.
His playing style is very similar to that of English star and Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish. Like Grealish, he loves to dribble and is brilliant at creating space for other players to get into. Funny enough, like Grealish he also gets fouled a lot with the 23-year old being the most fouled player in the league. Sarr’s number this season may not be good enough to attract the 40-50 million bids like last season, but with an abundance of pace and skill, the youngster still has bags of potential.
Josh Dasilva
Having come through Arsenal’s youth system, Josh Dasilva has been a mainstay in the Brentford team this season. The talented midfielder contributed five goals and four assists from the midfield this season. The 22-year old is not only well built but is also a very technically sound player. Having represented England at various youth levels, Dasilva is not only a brilliant early passer of the ball but can also perform defensive duties well. Arsenal must be regretting letting the talented youngster and it can come to bite them when Brentford visit the Emirates next season.
Todd Cantwell
Another talent from Norwich, Todd Cantwell is one stylish footballer. His top-corner penalty kick against Tottenham Hotspur last season went viral and not for the reasons you would think. The U-21 English playmaker stepped up and casually did a couple of keepy-uppies before slotting it home in front of 60,000 booing fans. This penalty shows what kind of a player Cantwell is. Calm and composed under pressure, the youngster was a class above the other youth talents in the Championship. His 12 goal contributions in the league this season doesn’t justify the level at which he operates and watching him play in the Premier League again will be a treat.
Bryan Mbuemo
The last player on this list and another player from the brilliant Brentford side is Brayn Mbuemo. Having represented France at various youth levels, the winger is really mature for his age. With 18 goals contribution this season, the 21-year-old is a menace to play against. Not only a great dribbler of the ball, but Mbuemo also knows when to pick out his teammates with a cross. The young Frenchman is also very pacey and has no problem beating defenders. Capable of cutting inside and creating chances, the Frenchman will be a treat to watch next season.
