Was the Chelsea Enzo Maresca Sacking Expected?

The Chelsea Enzo Maresca sacking came as a bit of a surprise. It is not normal to get sacked after winning a couple of trophies only a few months ago. However, the 45-year-old Argentine managed to do that precisely.

However, it has to be kept in mind that Fonseca got sacked by Chelsea, a club notorious for chopping managers at will. Winning the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League was clearly not a good enough cushion for Fonseca. Chelsea are in the fifth position in the league table at the moment. Being 15 points short of Arsenal’s tally means that they are virtually out of the Premier League title race already.

Enzo Maresca Sacking Was a Result of Ordinary Performances Along With Disciplinary Issues

The Enzo Maresca sacking likely had something to do with a lack of agreement with the club management led by American tycoon Todd Boehly. Maresca had vented his frustration recently about lack of freedom as the club’s manager.

However, the performance on the pitch was not that great either. With the squad they have and more importantly, the spending they have made, Chelsea should be Premier League title contenders. However, midway through the season, it is already clear that they are not willing to win the Premier League title this season.

Only two pieces of statistics are enough to explain the Royal Blues’ relative underperformance in what has been an underwhelming season so far for most Premier League clubs. Cole Palmer, the talismanic No.10 of Chelsea, has played in 10 matches only so far and scored four goals. Palmer has been injured for a considerable period of time this season and his frequent absence means that Chelsea have lacked a proper No.10 in a 4-2-3-1.

Enzo Fernandez has often filled in for Palmer, but the Argentine is not nearly as creative as a player as the Englishman. Fernandez’s ability to score with shots from the edge of the box is an asset, but he cannot make the forwards function as smoothly as Palmer can.

Secondly, the two of Chelsea’s new signings as strikers, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, have only eight goals between them so far. Delap has often been injured, while Pedro has been decent at best. That is certainly not what the club owners had in mind when they signed the two strikers in pursuit of more goals.

Maresca Might Get the Opportunity To Coach Another Club Soon

Even despite the Enzo Maresca sacking, he might get the chance to coach another top club pretty soon, as a manger of his ability is unlikely to be out of work for long. More importantly, not every club management is as dictatorial as Chelsea’s.

The contradictory attitude of the club is evident with the way they go for young, unproven managers repeatedly, yet refuse to give them enough time or freedom. It has happened with Frank Lampard, great as a player, but unproven as a manger, and Graham Potter in the past.

A high-profile manager is unlikely to come to take up the Chelsea job at the moment, with only half a season to go. It will be interesting to see the club’s course of action over the next week or so.
