Hannah Hampton Injury Update and BBC Sports Personality of the Year Nomination

Chelsea Women goalkeeper Hannah Hampton continues to make headlines both on and off the pitch – a testament to her remarkable rise in world football.

Head coach Sonia Bompastor recently provided a Hannah Hampton injury update, while the 25-year-old has also been honoured with a place on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 shortlist, underlining the exceptional year she’s had for club and country.

Hannah Hampton Injury Update

Hampton has not featured for Chelsea since sustaining a quadriceps injury in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal earlier this season, and the Blues boss has confirmed she remains sidelined as her rehabilitation continues.

Bompastor confirmed that Hampton is improving, but will miss the upcoming clash with Brighton & Hove Albion: “Hannah is doing well. She won’t be available for the [Brighton vs Chelsea WSL] game on the weekend.”

The head coach also noted that assessments are ongoing to determine whether Hampton might be able to return before the WSL winter break, which comes after a block of three fixtures. While there is a possibility she could be available before the break, Bompastor stressed that it’s still too early to be certain.

Bompastor’s cautious approach reflects not only the importance of Hampton to Chelsea’s ambitions but also the need to manage her fitness carefully. With a packed fixture calendar and Chelsea competing on multiple fronts, ensuring that their number one returns fully fit is a priority for both club and player.

Hannah Hampton Shortlisted for 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award

Off the pitch, Hampton’s extraordinary performances over the past year have earned her widespread recognition. Right now, headlines read ‘Hannah Hampton shortlisted for 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award,’ one of the most prestigious accolades in British sport.

This nomination caps a stellar period in Hampton’s career that saw her play a vital role in Chelsea’s domestic treble last season, as well as starring for England at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

During the Euros, she was instrumental in England’s success, particularly in penalty shootouts – saving crucial spot kicks in both the quarter-final and final to help the Lionesses lift the title.

The shortlist for BBC Sports Personality of the Year highlights just how influential Hampton has become, featuring other elite athletes such as England teammate Chloe Kelly, darts sensation Luke Littler, rugby star Ellie Kildunne, golfer Rory McIlroy, and 2025 Formula 1 champion Lando Norris. The award show, broadcast live on BBC One, will see the winner decided by public vote.

Hampton has also enjoyed individual success beyond the spotlight of the recent BBC nomination. She was awarded the first Women’s Yashin Trophy at the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony, recognising her as the world’s best goalkeeper, and won the 2025 BBC Sport Women’s Footballer of the Year award.

A positive Hannah Hampton injury update is imminent. For Chelsea, the hope is that once she completes her recovery, she will be able to build on this decorated period both domestically and internationally.

Her blend of shot-stopping ability, leadership, and composure under pressure has made her one of the standout players in the women’s game, and her continued development will be vital to Chelsea’s aspirations next year and beyond.
