Dele Alli Injury, Being Homeless – Where is it Going Wrong for Tottenham?

The past few years for any Tottenham supporter has been a whirlwind. Becoming title contenders and finishing in the top four three seasons in the row, keeping Mauricio Pochettino and Harry Kane beyond 2020. This season, though, has been far from impressive in many respects. From failing to sign anyone to being homeless and now being on the verge of failing to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League. So where is it all going wrong for Tottenham Hotspur?

Where is it Going Wrong for Tottenham?

Failing to Sign Anyone in the Summer

Summer 2018 was a transfer window to forget for all Tottenham fans and the club overall. Mauricio Pochettino reportedly had a war chest of £150 million but, once again, had a positive net spend. The past few windows had been terrible, with the likes of Kyle Walker leaving to rivals Manchester City and failing to improve the side overall. In May 2018, Tottenham had spent £252 million since the Argentine took over, however, received £202 million, which meant a negative net spend of only -£50m. Compare this to the rest of the top six, where Manchester United spent £596 million but only received £179 million. Teams around Spurs are all improving with quality whereas Spurs themselves are losing quality without replacing them. This is a main reason why Spurs will not challenge for the Premier League or Champions League this campaign.

Being Homeless

It was supposed to be a significant season with the brand new stadium opening. However, it has been so different with Mauricio Pochettino’s men still being tenants Wembley. Tottenham were supposed to open the brand new 62,000 seater stadium for the Liverpool game on 15th September. A month and a half later Spurs still find themselves in the national ground with January time being the estimated opening. This would have had a major effect on the players, especially those like Harry Kane and Harry Winks, who are Spurs fans.

Key Injuries

Injuries to any team are a massive blow but Spurs have really been unfortunate with fitness to key players. Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen have been the biggest blows to Spurs, with both key players weakening the attacking trio. With both of these playmakers out, Spurs have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net recently, winning their last three games by just a single goal. The defence has also been changed about with Jan Vertoghen and Danny Rose both on the sidelines. Losing a player like Vertoghen, an experienced defender, has shown with two mistakes in the game midweek against PSV.
