After an impressive 1-1 draw with Manchester United, spirits at Newcastle United are the highest they’ve been all season. Despite having just one win all season, fans are optimistic that a £200 million boost can fire The Toon to safety with some exciting January signings.
Newcastle Looking For Exciting January Signings To Save Their Season
Newcastle Need Exciting January Signings In Attack and Defence
With Joelinton making an unexpected and successful move into central midfield, Newcastle needs to replace him in attack and also add quality to a leaky defence. Premier League clubs were unhappy with the Saudi-led takeover at St James’ Park so are adopting an anyone but Newcastle policy when selling players in January. This rules out a move for Everton’s Lucas Digne and means Newcastle needs to look abroad when searching for exciting January signings to save their season. So far The Toon has been linked with a range of options including Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti and Flamengo’s Gabriel Barbosa.
Gabriel Barbosa
With Callum Wilson currently struggling with injury, a new striker is essential if Newcastle wants to survive. Barbosa, 25, is currently enjoying a post-season break after the Brazilian top-flight concluded on the 10th of December. Flamengo is willing to let Barbosa leave on a six-month loan deal with a £17 million option to buy if Newcastle stays in the Premier League.
Barbosa is a natural goalscorer having scored 51 goals in 72 games in the Brazillian Serie A. However, The Mirror report that Barbosa is unconvinced by a move to Tyneside as he’s unsure Newcastle will be able to attract enough quality players to stay up. As a result, The Toon may need to sign other stars before they can convince Barbosa to join.
Samuel Umtiti
Samuel Umtiti has only played in La Liga once this season and the Barcelona central defender desperately needs a move away to revive his career. There aren’t many clubs that want Umtiti who could afford his £220,000 a week salary but Newcastle could. MARCA reports that Newcastle could land the French international for a bargain of £17 million. This would be a mere dent in Newcastle’s budget and mean they can add more exciting January signings alongside Umtiti.
Umtiti is a World Cup winner and will bring some much-needed experience and quality to Newcastle’s backline. Signing him will mean Eddie Howe can play the attacking style of football he loves to play and Newcastle won’t concede as many goals as they have been. It gives Umtiti a chance to play and possibly make France’s World Cup squad and Barcelona get some much-needed financial relief. If this deal happens, everyone wins.
