Gianluigi Donnarumma’s Next Move: Why Manchester United and Manchester City Are Divided on the PSG Star

It is an absolute pity that Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was one of the best players last season in the world and won the treble with Paris Saint-Germain, is no longer a part of the club.

What is even more ironic is that he is yet to find a new club, with the two Manchester giants, Manchester United and Manchester City, being in contention to sign him.

Why Gianluigi Donnarumma’s Playing Style Could Clash With Guardiola’s Demands

Donnarumma is a big man with good shot-stopping abilities and has played credibly for a decade with AC Milan and PSG. The 26-year-old Italian has played behind a Milan side, which, just like most Italian teams, played with a defence that played deep.

That meant that the back-four or back-three typically remained in close proximity to him, which meant that the goalkeeper did not have to play passes with great precision. All he needed was to protect the goal with utmost seriousness.

However, Pep Guardiola’s demands at Manchester City have been a bit different. He replaced Joe Hart with Claudio Bravo and then Bravo with Ederson, with the notion that the goalie needs to be able to find his teammates with enough precision.

That helps the team play out from the back with much ease. However, Ederson’s recent performances have not been exceptional, and he has played second fiddle to Stephan Ortega at times.

There may be reservations against signing Donnarumma at City.

The other contenders to acquire his services, Manchester United, cannot afford such a luxury at the moment. All they should want is a capable goalkeeper, getting whom should in itself be a big upgrade on Andre Onana, who has hardly been impressive in United’s goal for the last two seasons for the Red Devils.

Getting a top goalkeeper like Donnarumma for a reasonable price would be a great deal for United, especially given the kind of form they have been in recent times.

Manchester United’s Goalkeeping Woes Make Donnarumma an Ideal Fit

Gianluigi Donnarumma is a Champions League and European Championship winner and deserves to play for a top club. And, unfortunately for them, Manchester United are not in that position at the moment, at least.

Ideally, Donnarumma should play for the Cityzens if he is to play in England. However, it could be difficult to convince Guardiola in that regard. The Man City boss is very particular with regard to the playing style of his team.

That lack of flexibility might mean that Donnarumma will not play for City.

However, if the Cityzens think that Donnarumma might turn out to be for them what Alisson Becker has been for Liverpool during the last seven years, they might reap the rewards for the same.

Playing for Man United is a rewarding thing as well, but the club is not going through great times.

It now remains to be seen where the big Italian goalkeeper ends up. Wherever it is, it can be said without much doubt that the club will benefit significantly from that move.
