Halldorsson to the Rescue, VAR Controversy – World Cup Group Stage Summary
The World Cup is truly underway with the first set of group games over and done with. What a couple of days we have had of international football. With all the major nations struggling to take points off smaller teams. Here is a summary of the first set of group games.
Russia Please the Home Crowd
Not the most exciting group in the competition, but it definitely delivered a few goals and entertainment in the first game. The hosts kicked-off the competition with a thrilling 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia. This added excitement to the Russian fans as it was the first win in seven games – from the branded “worst ever Russia national team” no less.
Cristiano Ronaldo Hat-Trick
Ronaldo vs Ramos as they faced each other on separate sides. Portugal and Spain played out an entraining 3-3 draw and dubbed the game of the group stage or possibly tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo stole the headlines with a fantastic hat-trick to earn a point for his nation. Both teams will now be fighting for the top spot as Portugal faces Morocco and Spain versus Iran.
VAR Controversy
It was time for France to show their quality on the biggest stage in the world. But their performance did not reflect the final scoreline. The Bleus were awarded a penalty from VAR, first time ever used, but caused a lot of stir. Australia did fight back to draw level only for Behich to deflect Pogba shot over Matt Ryan.
Halldorsson to the Rescue
What a story this is. Iceland just two years ago beat England in the round of 16 of the European Championship. Now in 2018, they drew 1-1 to Messi’s Argentina after coming back from 1-0 down. Halldorsson, originally a film director, saved Lionel Messi penalty to grab that crucial point for Iceland.
Brazil Struggle Against Switzerland
Coming into the World Cup, Brazil were the favourites to lift the trophy. But Neymar and Co struggled to break down Switzerland defence despite going one goal up from Couthino magic. However, the Swiss defender, Zuber, got the European side back level and manage to hold out Brazil efforts of the late equalizer.
Harry Kane Strikes Twice
Four years ago, Harry Kane was fighting for his place in the youth squad after a range of loans. Now the 24-year-old has become the captain of England and struck twice against Tunisia to bring the three points home. in the right place at the right time as The Spurs striker tap in from close range in the 11th minute. Before being wrestled to the floor by The Tusianians defender twice. But in the dying seconds won it for Gareth Southgate men after a decent performance.
