Jordan Pickford’s contract with Everton has been extended by four years. Pickford, who is England’s No. 1 goalkeeper, has decided not to try his luck with a bigger club, which could offer him the prospect of playing in the UEFA Champions League. Pickford thus continues to be the most high-profile player for the Toffees.
Pickford should be England’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2026 World Cup as well. However, he should try to do his bit to ensure that Everton manage to get a slot in a European competition next season.
Jordan Pickford Contract Extension: Everton Retain One of the Best Goalkeepers in England?
Pickford is one of the best goalkeepers in England at the moment. Aside from Alisson Becker, Gianluigi Donnarumma and David Raya, there is probably no better goalkeeper than Pickford in English club football at the moment.
Jordan Pickford’s contract extension at Everton will give him an opportunity to add to his legacy in English footbal. Pickford has been at the club at 2017 and is into his ninth season with them, with 322 appearances
Pickford has also racked up 80 international appearances for England and collected a runners-up medal at the 2021 Euros, as well as the 2024 Euros. Aside from Peter Shilton, no other English goalkeeper has played in more than 100 matches for the Three Lions. Pickford has already gone past someone like David Seaman in terms of international caps.

Pickford’s Physical Attributes Not Quite Ideal for a Goalkeeper
Pickford is 6’1″ tall, which is somewhat short for a top goalkeeper. A top goalkeeper these days is around 6’4″. However, Pickford is one of the best shot-stoppers in the world and makes up for his lack of height with that ability. Pickford also has good distribution skills and can have a commanding presence inside the penalty box.
His most important attribute as an international goalkeeper is his ability to rise to the occasion in major tournaments. Both at the 2020 Euros and 2024 Euros, he was one of England’s best players.
However, a player of his stature should probably be playing in the Champions League. As an Everton player, he does not get the chance to play in that competition at all.
The 31-year-old should harbour the ambition of playing in Europe’s biggest club competition, as time is running out for him as a professional footballer. However, Jordan Pickford’s contract extension shows that he seems to have given loyalty more importance than ambition.
Peter Shilton also managed to win only a solitary first division title while playing for Nottingham Forest, and played for the majority of his career for lesser clubs like Leicester City, Stoke City and Southampton. Pickford will not be too disappointed to walk in the footsteps of the former England goalkeeper. He has also proved that even these days, a player can be relatively unambitious by modern parameters.
Everton fans should treasure Pickford while he is at their club. These are not exactly glory days for the Toffees, and Pickford stands out as one of the very few exceptional players at the club.
