Liverpool Striker Problem: How Hugo Ekitike’s Injury Has Increased the Woes for the Reds
April 14, 2026, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom: HUGO EKITIKE has ruptured his Achilles tendon during the UEFA Champions League 2025 26 Quarter-final Leg 2 game between LIVERPOOL FC and PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN at the Anfield Stadium in Liverpool, England. The Liverpool striker problem does not seem to be going away. Hugo Ekitike’s ruptured Achilles has forced him out of action, and he will remain so for at least another few months. Alexander Isak, the most expensive signing in the history of the Premier League, has scored only four goals in 22 matches for the Reds this season, which has added to the Liverpool striker problem.

In such a scenario, Liverpool are probably going to search for another striker. Ekitike should be out for a long while, which means that they will need back-up for Isak. It will not be easy for them to solve the Liverpool striker problem.

Liverpool Striker Problem Has Come to the Fore After Hugo Ekitike’s Injury

Ekitike has scored 17 goals in 45 matches this season, which makes him Liverpool‘s best performer. The French striker has been a bright spark in an otherwise forgettable season for Arne Slot’s team. Isak has had an awful beginning at his new club, and Cody Gakpo has not done much to alleviate the Liverpool striker problem either.

Gakpo has scored nine goals in 50 matches this season, which is not at all a good enough return for a forward at a top club. Gakpo had a good 2024/25 season, in which he scored 18 goals. However, his form this season has not been encouraging at all, and Liverpool are reportedly looking for his replacement already.

It means that the club might be without adequate back-up for Isak for a few months into next season, as Ekitike will not be available, and the replacement for Gakpo, whoever it is, will be new to the league.

Florian Wirtz, another new signing for whom Liverpool broke the bank, has scored seven times in 47 matches this season, which means that he has hardly fared better than Gakpo. Liverpool supporters will hope that Gakpo can turn things around next season, but the German will have some catching up to do.

Hence, the goal-scoring woes might return to haunt Liverpool next season as well. Liverpool have scored 60 goals in 36 Premier League matches so far, which is the least among the top-four teams and 15 fewer than Manchester City’s tally of goals.

It is quite evident that they are missing a striker like Erling Haaland. Arsenal do not have a stand-out goal-scorer like Haaland, but Viktor Gyokeres has crossed the 20-goal mark, and others like Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka have performed better than their Liverpool counterparts.

Moreover, Arsenal have a superior defence and, therefore, they have not needed to score goals as badly as Liverpool have. The Reds will have to replace the legendary Mohamed Salah anyway, meaning that we can expect to see a rebuild in their attack.

Yan Diomande Could Be Signed To Solve Liverpool Striker Problem

Diomande, the 19-year-old RB Leipzig forward, has scored 13 goals in 35 matches for his club in his debut season in the Bundesliga. He is already on the radar of Liverpool and might be signed by them as a long-term option.

Still, the club’s supporters will hope that Ekitike gets fit as early as possible and Isak regains his form. Otherwise, Liverpool might have to face the travails of the current season in the next one as well.
