Liverpool’s Reluctance to Renew Salah Contract Baffling

Liverpool are having a great 2024-25 season at the moment, winning the lion’s share of their games at a canter. They recently beat Real Madrid 2-0 in a UEFA Champions League match, with Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo scoring the goals for them. Liverpool are the top of both the Premier League and Champions League table at the moment.

However, what seems to be quite puzzling is the Reds’ reluctance to renew the contract of Mohamed Salah, their talismanic player. Salah has scored 12 goals in 19 matches this season, thus enjoying a rich vein of form.

Salah’s contract will expire in 2025:

Salah’s contract with Liverpool will expire next year. The club has not made any move yet towards giving the 32-year-old Egyptian winger a contract extension. As Salah continues to win matches for them, the club supporters must be eager to see him extend his stay at Anfield.

Offers from Saudi Arabian clubs, the new destination for aging superstars of European club football, are already there for the in-form Liverpool winger. Liverpool might get a pretty hefty amount by selling him in the January Transfer Window before his contract expires.

The club will surely not want Salah to leave on free transfer. However, the question as to whether Liverpool have the ability to replace him persists. Although the Reds have quality forwards already in their squad, Salah is the only genuine right-winger they have.

Replacing Salah will not be easy:

With 223 goals to his credit for Liverpool, Salah’s Liverpool impact has him already in contention of being termed as the greatest Liverpool player of all time—though Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish might have a say in that.

The kind of numbers Salah has racked up during his eight seasons at Liverpool are comparable to Wayne Rooney’s at Manchester United or Thierry Henry’s at Arsenal. This gives him a legendary status at the club and thus, he deserves to get some special treatment.

Moreover, it has to be remembered in this context that it will not be easy for the Reds to find a suitable replacement for him. Other quality right-wingers like Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden are all well-settled ay their respective clubs and are not likely to leave them anytime soon.

Hence, unless Liverpool can land their hands on a very young Lamine Yamal at Barcelona, they are unlikely to find a proper replacement for the Egyptian. It is very unlikely that they will get Tamal, who has just begun his journey at Barca.

Hence, considering a things, it seems justified for Liverpool to extend Salah’s contract, even if the latter demands a hike in his salary. With a very important match against Manchester United coming up, winning which will be a huge step towards winning their 20th league title, the Reds’ management might consider that.

Irrespective of whether he gets an extension or not, Salah’s legendary status for Liverpool is already confirmed. It will be a pity if he has to leave the Premier League while still being at the top of his game, though.
