For Lorient, it is a return to the elite division, so they will be hoping to become a regular in Ligue 1 and preserve their status. Just a year after being relegated to the second division, FC Lorient bounced back at the first time of asking. Les Merlus, who will celebrate their 100th anniversary as a club in Ligue 1, finished top of the log to emerge champions of the second division. They will be one of the favourites to stay up.

Led by Olivier Pantaloni, who left his long-term job at Ajaccio, Les Merlus won 22 of their 34 league games to secure promotion. Young forward Eli Junior Kroupi (18) was key to that success, scoring 22 goals in 30 matches to clinch the golden boot award. However, he will not be part of the Ligue 1 campaign, as he is headed to Premier League side Bournemouth.

With the new season fast approaching, Noah Cadiou arrived from Rodez as one of their signings at the time of writing. In terms of the exits, apart from Eli Junior Kroupi, who has left for the Premier League, Yoann Cathline also moved to the Dutch League, while others like Julien Ponceau, Julien Laporte, and Stéphane Diarra all left on a free transfer.

Lorient’s return to Ligue 1 this season is simply focused on beating the drop, and any other thing that comes along with it will be taken as an extra. Facing sides like PSG will test their readiness to rub shoulders with the big boys in the division.

On the other hand, before the start of most Ligue 1 campaigns, PSG are usually the team to beat, and they see the title as a birthright. PSG have won 11 of the past 13 league titles, and they are looking good for another triumph this season.

PSG have been the best team in Europe in the past six months. Without any doubt, the departure of Kylian Mbappé in 2024 gave the Paris club the impetus to build a squad based on collective input and cohesion. That change in direction helped Les Parisiens secure their first UEFA Champions League title last May with a resounding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan, completing a historic continental treble that included Ligue 1 and Coupe de France triumphs.

They took that form to the Club World Cup in the USA this summer, but they were unable to secure the title. They were soundly beaten 3-0 by Chelsea in the final decided at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. With that disappointment behind them, Luis Enrique will be keen to see his team maintain their shape and winning streak when they continue their campaign in Ligue 1.

Key players have emerged during this period, notably Ousmane Dembélé, who contributed 35 goals and 16 assists across all competitions, and Vitinha, whose midfield mastery has been pivotal. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who arrived in January, played a good role in the treble. Young talents like Désiré Doué and João Neves have also risen to prominence over the past campaign. PSG played 65 matches in the 2024-25 season, and that could have taken a toll on their players going into the 2025-26 season.

Apart from the Club World Cup final against Chelsea, where they were dominated from start to finish, PSG have been ruthless in the league, and that might be a problem for the home side. Shockingly, in the past three Ligue 1 meetings between the two clubs, Lorient have a win, PSG also have a win, and the last one ended in a stalemate.

Line-ups

Lorient are expected to field most of the players who helped them to seal promotion in the early days of this campaign. Based on the lineup in their preseason game against Osauna in July, Les Merlus will deploy a 4-4-2 formation with Bris and Soumano leading the line for the side. At the time of writing, they do not have any major injury concerns.

Lorient possible XI: Leroy; Silva, Akakpo, Talbi, Yongwa; Mvuka Mvuka, Cadiou, Abergel, Pagis; Soumano, Bris.

Last season, PSG benefited greatly from having a largely injury-free squad throughout the season. However, after such an intense run, it wouldn’t be surprising if a few players end up missing matches in the new season. Despite this, the champions are expected to retain Gianluigi Donnarumma between the posts, with captain Marquinhos anchoring the defence and Achraf Hakimi offering width and presence from right-back. The midfield is likely to feature the familiar trio of Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, and João Neves, while Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are set to spearhead the attack once again.

PSG possible XI: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Ruiz, Vitinha, Neves; Doue, Dembele, Kvaratskhelia

Prediction

Lorient have a lot of work to do. They have not been active in the summer transfer window at the time of writing. They also lost their goalscorer to the Premier League, so they will need another outlet for goals if they want to stay up. Their record against PSG gives them a chance, but the current level of the both clubs is quite different at the moment. By the way, get your Lorient tickets early enough to catch the game.

When it comes to Ligue 1 this season, PSG have dominated the league extensively, and despite the success recorded last season, they will be looking for consolidation. They have won six of the past ten games between them and Lorient. They will start as favourites, and anything short of a win will be considered an upset.
