Luxembourg vs Germany 0-2: Nick Woltemade Brace Proves That He Is Moving up the Ranks

A Nick Woltemade brace helped the visitors win the Luxembourg vs Germany game 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Luxembourg on Friday, November 14. Germany thus took a step closer to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Germany vs Slovakia is the next game for Julian Nagelsmann on home soil, and should they be able to win in that match, they should secure qualification for the World Cup, and Nick Woltemeade, who’s also making waves for his club, may be the key in achieving this goal.

Nick Woltemade’s Impact Beyond Luxembourg vs Germany Victory

Woltemade signed for Newcastle United at the start of the season. He has been a decent performer for the Magpies as well. As of now, he has scored six goals in 14 matches for Newcastle United. In fact, much to the surprise of many, Woltemade has so far easily outperformed Alexander Isak, the former Newcastle United striker who left for Liverpool after much controversy.

Woltemade is 1.98 meters tall and, hence, his aerial presence is formidable inside the opposition penalty box. Hence, he scores a considerable portion of his goals through headers. The 23-year-old German scored 18 goals in the Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart last season and was picked by Newcastle thereafter.

Woltemade has earned only seven international caps for Germany so far and has scored three goals in them, two coming from the Luxembourg vs Germany clash. Germany has been lacking a quality No. 9 for quite some time now. Since the retirement of Miroslav Klose a decade ago, Germany have not had a prolific striker.

Niclas Fullkrug has impressed only in patches, scoring 14 goals in 24 matches for Germany. However, he will be 33 by the 2026 World Cup, which is not the ideal age for an international striker to shine. Kai Havertz has been tried as the No. 9 as well, but he is not a striker and more of an attacking midfielder.

Havertz has scored only 20 goals in 55 matches for Germany so far, which shows that he has clearly not been scoring at a rate expected from a top striker.

The Nick Woltemade brace, alongside his progressive form, stands as a silver lining in Germany’s journey to the World Cup.

Germany Top of Group A in European World Cup Qualifiers

After victory in the Luxembourg vs Germany game, the Germans are at the top of Group A in the European World Cup qualifiers, with 12 points in five matches.

Winning the Germany vs Slovakia fixture will take them closer to qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Slovakia had beaten the Germans earlier in a qualifying match this year, and revenge will be on the Germans’ minds. However, they should have the long-term goal of doing well in the World Cup in mind as well, as the four-time champions have been really disappointing in each of the last two editions of the tournament.

If the Germans are to do well or even win the World Cup next year, Woltemade will have to play his part. The German striker still has the remainder of the current season to show his quality as a goal-scorer. Newcastle United supporters will also hope that he will continue his good run for the club this season.
