Manchester City Send Statement as Leeds United Torn Apart

Manchester City vs Leeds United

Pep Guardiola welcomed Leeds to the Etihad stadium for a game that many Leeds fans will be desperate to forget. In less than ten minutes, Phil Foden opened the scoring after a sloppy Leeds defence couldn’t keep the ball out of the net. It only took five minutes for Jack Grealish to make it 2-0 and it was looking like it would be a long night for the away end. Leeds never managed to get a grip of this game and by half-time they looked like a shattered team. Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, John Stones and Nathan Ake were also among the goals.

The player that stood out most for Manchester City was Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian international hasn’t had the best run of form recently after suffering from various illnesses and injuries.  Some fans were even questioning his place in the squad. However, De Bruyne showed a glimpse of his former self in the game against Leeds. Not only did he score two goals, but he also navigated the midfield perfectly. It seems he has found his form at the perfect time and this is a problem for any team that wants to challenge for the league.

Unbeaten Run

Manchester City have been on a dominant run in the Premier League winning all seven of their last games. Not only have they been winning these games, they have also been winning them with ease. Their last league loss came in October to Crystal palace. Since then, the Manchester side has scored 20 goals whilst only conceding three. With an unstoppable attack and such a sturdy defence, it will be tough for any team to take points from the current Premier League champions.

Other teams who are in and amongst the title race include Liverpool and Chelsea. Liverpool have been on a very good run themselves in the league. Jurgen Klopp’s side have won their last five league games, scoring 14 goals. Though this may seem impressive, their last two games against Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers were very narrow 1-0 wins. With attackers such Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Divock Origi out injured, Liverpool have struggled to fire in goals as they did earlier in the season. However, their defence has proven to be very reliable and have only conceded one goal in their last five matches.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are having a much tougher time keeping up. Chelsea eked out a late win against Leeds in their last game courtesy of a 94th minute penalty. Before that, they had dropped points to many teams in their last six games including West Ham United, Burnley and a Manchester United side that had just sacked their manager. The Champions League Winners will need to step up their game if they hope to remain in the title race and Chelsea supporters will hope the return of Romelu Lukaku helps them do that.

What’s Next For Manchester City?

Manchester City will take on Newcastle United in their next league game. Newcastle are currently 19th in the table with only one win to their name. Guardiola will look to make quick work of Eddie Howe’s side before they take on Leicester City and Brentford before the new year.
