Mohamed Salah Liverpool Controversy: Absolutely Uncalled For?

Mohamed Salah Liverpool controversy has now reached its boiling point. The Egyptian recently let out his frustration in an interview over being benched in each of the Reds’ last three matches. As a result of that, he was not included in Liverpool’s squad for the visit to Inter Milan.

Salah will be leaving for AFCON shortly, and it remains to be seen whether he plays for Liverpool ever again, as the January transfer window will be on when he comes back from the tournament.

Salah Liverpool Controversy – Is It Uncalled For?

The Salah Liverpool controversy was uncalled for, especially for a player of his stature. Salah said in his latest interview that he felt like he was “thrown under the bus” by Liverpool. However, he seems to be blowing things out of proportion, as he has only been benched owing to bad form.

Many might argue that Salah has not been Liverpool’s worst player, having scored five goals in 19 matches for them this season. However, the fact remains that Dominik Szoboszlai has been a better player than him this season. There are always more expectations for Salah and hence, as his attacking influence has decreased, his inability to track back to help the defence is being highlighted.

As the Hungarian is being played on the right flank, there is no room for the 33-year-old Egyptian in the starting XI now. This is by no means an unprecedented situation and has happened with many star players in the past.

Alexander Isak, who broke the record in British football to get signed by Liverpool, has also been benched in most of the recent matches by Arne Slot. The simple reason for that is that Hugo Ekitike has been in much better form than Isak. Therefore, Isak cannot complain about being benched by his club.

Salah has done incredible things for his club over the last eight years. He has 250 goals and 113 assists in 420 matches for Liverpool, having won two Premier League and a UEFA Champions League title. He has been one of the best players in the world during the said time period.

However, the recent Salah Liverpool controversy leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Salah Has Been Trying To Exert His Influence as a Star Player

Salah can be accused of trying to throw his weight around. He has questioned Slot’s man-management skills, but the reality remains that he himself has been acting in an immature manner.

No individual is bigger than the club or the club’s interests. Salah has done wonderful things in the past and he has been duly given a lot of love by Liverpool’s supporters. There is no point in tarnishing that wonderful legacy he has with the club.

It will be an absolute pity if Salah’s stint with Liverpool ends with the current controversy. Both the player and the club deserve much better in this case. However, Slot will also have some ego on his side as a Premier League-winning manager. So the Mohamed Salah Liverpool controversy might continue to bother the club’s supporters.

Hence, the situation is unlikely to improve unless one of the parties becomes a bit more flexible. It remains to be seen whether Salah will remain with the club in the near future.
