Newcastle’s Home Form vs Newcastle’s Away Form: A Limiting Factor for the Magpies’ Success So Far This Season?

St James’ Park has been a fortress in all competitions so far this season, as Newcastle’s home form suggests. However, Newcastle’s away form has been anything but that, limiting the Magpies’ success so far this season. But what have their results been, and where may they improve?

Newcastle’s Home Form: Up There With the Best

So far at home this season in all competitions, the Magpies have won seven matches, losing three. Such stellar home form is up there with the best in the Premier League and in Europe.

Newcastle’s home form has aided them highly in the Champions League, producing memorable nights for their fans. These results have included victories against SL Benfica and, most recently, Athletic Bilbao, who currently sit 11th in La Liga. Such memorable victories have also produced memorable moments, including a terrific Dan Burn header against Bilbao.

In addition to this, Newcastle’s home form has also produced solid Premier League victories and allowed them to advance in domestic competitions, including in the EFL Cup against Tottenham.

However, Newcastle’s home form is not perfect. Eddie Howe’s side have lost against the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona and, most agonizingly, against Liverpool and a late Rio Ngumoha winner.

Newcastle’s Away Form: Contrary to the Home Success

Newcastle’s away form does not replicate their home form, agonizingly for Newcastle fans. The Magpies have only won one away match so far this season, losing two and drawing three.

The one away victory for Newcastle came in the Champions League against Union Saint-Gilloise. Since enjoying a dream debut in the Champions League, the Belgian side have struggled in the competition and were defeated in a clinical manner by Newcastle, 4-0.

In the Premier League, Newcastle’s away form has been inadequate, with a lack of goalscoring threat. The northern side have drawn 0-0 on multiple occasions, including against Aston Villa and Leeds, as well as losing most recently against West Ham.

Newcastle’s Home Form vs Newcastle’s Away Form: The Differences

With such a contrast in home form in comparison to away form, there has to be a vastly different standard of performance to account for that.

When playing at home, Newcastle are often an adventurous, energetic side, buoyed on by the raucous St James’ Park. This culminates in the quality they have on the pitch, often indicating that they are a feared opponent on their own turf.

However, the level of quality that Newcastle now boast in their side should mean that their away form is at a higher standard. Some may argue that their midfield three of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton is one of the best in the league. Furthermore, striker Nick Woltemade was one of the most expensive Premier League signings in the summer.

Frustratingly for Newcastle fans however, their away performances have often been stagnated and less adventurous. With frequent 0-0 draws, they have presented a lack of a clinical edge.

Furthermore, their response to the home side gaining momentum has often been inadequate, as represented by the defeat against West Ham. Although Eddie Howe’s team took the lead, they conceded twice in fifteen minutes, allowing the Hammers to overturn the deficit.

Conclusion

It is undeniable that Newcastle are a side that boast some of the best quality in the Premier League and that Eddie Howe has transformed them into a top-level side. With the change of ownership, there has been a high level of investment in their side.

However, this season, results have been contrasting, and many Newcastle fans will be hoping that their away form improves to a similar standard in comparison to their home form.
