Out-of-Favour Barcelona Winger Could be Back to His Best if He Reunites with Thomas Tuchel

Having produced spectacular performances at Borussia Dortmund, which included 32 goal contributions in 55 appearances in all competitions out of favour Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele was one of the most sought-after players at one stage of his career. So it didn’t come as a surprise when Barcelona signed him for €140 million in 2017 making him the club’s most expensive signing. However, the Frenchman has struggled for form ever since moving to Spain, as he has had to deal with injuries time and again and it doesn’t seem likely he’s ever going to live up to his price tag at the Camp Nou.

Out-of-Favour Barcelona Winger Could Bounce Back at the Bridge

From Barcelona Flop to Chelsea Hero?

Given his current form, it might prove difficult for him to get good offers from Europe’s biggest clubs. However, according to The Evening Standard, Premier League club Chelsea have shown interest in the 24-year old- a deal which, if it goes through, would see him reunited with his former manager Thomas Tuchel. Dembele played under Tuchel at Dortmund in the 2016/17 season and proved to be a big game player in that period, as Dortmund won the DFB-Pokal and finished third on the league table, behind Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.

Now that the opportunity presents itself for both of them to work together again, maybe the German tactician can re-ignite the fire that burned within the Frenchman? Speaking in an interview ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on January 23, 2021, Tuchel said this concerning Dembele;

“He’s a very good player, and I am very fortunate to have trained him in my time at Dortmund. It was only one year, it should have been longer, but I needed to leave and he decided to leave. We are not in close contact, we have met here and there because of his duties for the French national team when I was in Paris. We exchanged some messages. I have absolutely no idea why he is in this situation, I don’t know the detail, so it’s better not to talk.”
