Possible Replacements for Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid

Real Madrid is experiencing a very challenging time at the moment with results not going their way leading to questions over the manager. To add to all of this, the club’s captain, Sergio Ramos whose contract expires in the summer is stuck in a stalemate with the club, making his departure the ever more likely. It goes without saying that replacing him would require lots of planning and investment. Here are three possible replacements for Sergio Ramos.

Real Madrid Start to Look for Sergio Ramos Successor

Matthijs De Ligt

The young Dutch defender is the closest when it comes to acquiring Ramos’ role at Real Madrid. Matthijs De Ligt’s qualities and abilities more or less match that of the Real Madrid captain. Terrific and fearless defending have taken the former Ajax captain to the top at a very young age but what distinguishes him from other young centre backs is his leadership and ability to motivate others.

The Los Blancos have enjoyed Ramos’ leadership over the years and that has led the club to several titles over the years. With Florentino Perez looking to usher in a new era of Galacticos, what better way than kickstarting it with a readymade replacement in De Ligt.

Milan Skriniar

This may seem to be a surprising option considering the love Milan Skriniar has for Inter Milan and lack of rumours linking him to Spain. However, Skriniar has been one of the most underrated defenders in the world for quite some time now. His playing style is very unique which consists of standing tackles instead of sliding into the player’s feet. Real Madrid would surely welcome these skills revolutionizing the defence. Another plus point is that the Slovakian international is 26 and is set to be in his prime years over the next seasons.

Dayot Upamecano

Last season, the world witnessed the rise of a star at RB Leipzig, in Dayot Upamecano. The 23-year-old centre back played a crucial role in taking his side to the Champions League semi-finals. The Frenchman is young, athletic and strong in the air. His release clause too shouldn’t pose a problem for Florentino Perez.

However, such a promising talent will surely have various clubs interested in him like Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Liverpool. When it comes to finances Madrid can compete with the best but if they are to win the race for the defender’s signature much will depend on how convinced the board is of the player and whether Zinedine Zidane stays as the coach next season.
