Premier League Early Season Form: Inconsistent Performances From Most Teams in The Early Stages

Many Premier League fans have determined that various sides have left a lot to be desired with their performances, indicating that Premier League early season form has been inconsistent on the whole.

Liverpool are the only side who have won all of their matches so far, yet required late winners in each match to ensure victory, indicating that even Arne Slot’s men aren’t performing at their desired level. But has any team been consistently impressive this Premier League season so far?

Premier League Early Season Form: Top of the League

Liverpool

Arne Slot’s Liverpool are among the few undefeated teams thus far, but are the only ones with a 100% record, which importantly includes a victory against Arsenal.

However, the hammer blow for each of these victories has come late on in each match, suggesting that performances have been somewhat unconvincing.

Furthermore, in the first two matches, the Reds conceded four goals, indicating that there is a hint of volatility in their defence.

Arsenal

Arsenal sit second in the Premier League currently, having won three of their four matches, with their defeat coming against Liverpool. Victories against Leeds and Nottingham Forest were convincing for Mikel Arteta’s men.

However, the victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford and the loss at Anfield once more showed signs of a pragmatic approach and apprehension in their creativity.

This was not to their detriment against Manchester United, but it may be inferred that they may have obtained a result at Anfield should they have started Martin Odegaard or Eberechi Eze and utilised their creativity.

Tottenham

Sitting on the same number of points as Arsenal, yet one place below them in the league, Tottenham have improved hugely so far in comparison to last season. Thomas Frank’s side have solidified their approach defensively, whilst showing attacking flair, with the addition of new faces including Mohammed Kudus.

Although the loss against Bournemouth was a notable defeat for the side, as the Cherries were deserving of three points, fans can be more satisfied so far in comparison to last season.

Bournemouth

The team that sit fourth in the Premier League, AFC Bournemouth, some may argue, have been one of the most impressive sides in the Premier League so far.

Despite having to replace three of their defenders and their goalkeeper this summer, the Cherries continue to impress, with their only defeat so far coming at Anfield.

Winger Antoine Semenyo has perhaps been a standout performer, scoring three goals and assisting two so far, and full-back Adrien Truffert has admirably filled the void left by the departing Milos Kerkez.

Premier League Early Season Form: The Bottom of the League

At the current time of writing, none of the newly promoted sides sit in the relegation spots. In fact, the relegation spots are currently filled by notable sides, including West Ham and Aston Villa, whose Premier League early season form so far has left a lot to be desired.

These teams, some may argue, do have the quality to improve, but what has been the reasoning for their inconsistency so far this season?

West Ham

West Ham languish in 18th, having had a torrid start under Graham Potter. Casting the victory away against Nottingham Forest aside, the Hammers have conceded 11 goals so far, with many critiquing the ease at which the opposition may get past their defence and the lack of threat in attacking areas, against the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

The likes of Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta are representative of good quality players in attacking areas. However, the midfield and defence for West Ham has been critiqued for being slow, and shying away from tackles and physicality, hence the ease at which teams have scored against them this season.

Furthermore, manager Graham Potter has changed the formation of the team multiple times this season, indicating there is a lack of confidence in the system in which the side will operate in.

Aston Villa

In 19th, Aston Villa remain the only side in England’s top seven divisions yet to get on the scoresheet this season. They sit on two points, with 0-0 draws against Everton and Newcastle.

However, Unai Emery’s side have lacked imagination and creativity, as they struggle to break down opposition defences. This is represented by the fact that they have only had three shots on target in their two away matches so far, indicating there has been a lack of service for Ollie Watkins so far this season.

Although their plight hasn’t been helped by uncertainty regarding the likes of Emiliano Martinez, the Villans have signed Harvey Elliot and Jadon Sancho, both of whom may add top quality to their attack should they find form.

Wolves

Vitor Pereira’s Wolves prop up the Premier League table so far, yet to register a point on the board. Losses for the midlands side have often come by a slender margin, indicating that they have often been let down by a defensive lapse in concentration.

Vitor Pereira has lost notable figures in his side, including Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha, and the Wolves board have tried to be strategic when replacing them, signing lesser known players. This indicates that a period of adjustment may be neccessary for the signings that have come from the Dutch League and Brazilian League respectively.

However, patience with Wolves will need to be monitored to ensure that the midlands side do not continue in their current position for an extended period of time.

Conclusion

There are no outwardly impressive frontrunners so far in the Premier League this season, indicating that the race at the top may be an open and intriguing one as the season progresses.

However, it is important to note that sides including Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur have been impressive in their own right, showing significant improvement and retention of quality to sit in the top four.
