Can Ronaldo catch Lewandowski to win the golden boot? Things are heating up in the race for the golden boot as the season draws to a close.

Can Ronaldo catch Lewandowski in race for golden boot?

Last Season’s Golden Boot

Barcelona star Lionel Messi scooped his sixth European Golden Shoe award last season but has been nowhere near that goal tally this season with 23 efforts from 37 league matches representing a significant drop in performance.

Messi held off competition from some of the continent’s best goalscorers to pick up the prize for the third year in a row, leaving the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Fabio Quagliarella, and Mohamed Salah trailing in his wake.

Cristiano Ronaldo was uncharacteristically off the pace in his first season with Juventus and he has come roaring back this time around with an improved haul this term.

Lewandowski, Ronaldo, or… Immobile?

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 30 goals this season from just 34 league matches and with six matches left he has a chance to win the golden shoe as the frontrunner this year Robert Lewandowski has scored 34 league goals.

Ciro Immobile has 30 goals too and is breathing heavily on both Lewandowski and revving the pressure on Ronaldo. Since the resumption of football Ronaldo has been a man on a mission, scoring goals left and right. He racked up a tally of  8 goals in six successive matches.

Following Juventus’ match against Lazio, both Immobile and Ronaldo are tied with 30 goals, just four goals shy of Lewandowski. The Bundesliga has already concluded with Lewandowski finishing top scorer with 34 goals so he won’t get a chance to add to his tally.

One would be foolish to bet against Ronaldo scoring four goals or more in the remaining four matches to both equal and overtake Lewandowski and add to his 3 golden shoes already won.

He should finish with 35 or more as Roma are the only tough opponent left for Juve to face with Sampdoria, Udinese, and Cagliari all relatively weaker sides that Ronaldo should find the net against. Ronaldo can still catch Lewandowski.

Immobile, although not as big a name as Ronaldo or Lewandowski, also has a chance at the award. The Eagles have had an amazing season, challenging for the Scudetto, when they weren’t even expected to get the top four. One of the main reasons for their success has been the Italian striker, Ciro Immobile. The Italian has been absolutely amazing in the Serie A. Although Lazio have hit a rough patch in form recently, Immobile has scored at the vital moment times. If he wants to challenge the mighty Ronaldo, Immobile will have to pull off a series of impressive performances, something he is certainly capable of. Just like Lazio, Immobile is the underdog, but he can still surprise the big dogs. Don’t sleep on Immobile, he can also pull off the impossible to dethrone Lewandowski and Ronaldo.
