The six Bayern Munich contracts expiring this summer are already a major off-field distraction for the Bavarians.
While granted, not all of the six are key players, it still prevents them from focusing on the important next few months.
Here, we will focus on the players whose Bayern Munich contracts expire this coming summer.
Six Bayern Munich Contracts That Are Expiring This Summer
The half a dozen players with expiring Bayern Munich contracts do not even include Nicolas Jackson or Bara Sapoko Ndiaye, both of whom have loan deals with the Bavarian club that also end at the conclusion of this season.
The six players we will focus on are Dayot Upamecano, Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, Raphaël Guerreiro, Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich.
Of those players with expiring Bayern Munich contracts, Upamecano is by far the most crucial.
At 27, the French centre-back is at the perfect age for a footballer, with many good years likely still ahead of him.
“Upa”, as he is affectionately known, has attracted interest from many top European clubs. Since Vincent Kompany became the Bayern Munich head coach, Upamecano has cut out most of the serious blunders that characterised earlier parts of his time with the German giants.
The Bavarians have been negotiating a potential new deal for him for about a year, with many headlines in the media proclaiming that a new contract for Upamecano was all but a formality; however, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Max Eberl, the sporting board member of the club, admitted that there was no news in terms of a contract extension as of Wednesday, January 21.

The Goalkeeper Situation
Of course, first choice goalkeeper and team captain, Manuel Neuer, is also important.
However, as we have reported previously, at 39-years-old, and as injury-prone as he has become, his situation is far different from that of Upamecano, and the German shot-stopper will likely be able to decide his future on his own.
If Neuer wants to continue for another year, he probably will. He has truly been one of the greatest servants of the club in their over 100-year history.
Meanwhile, third-choice keeper Sven Ulreich, who is another one of the players with expiring Bayern Munich contracts, will most likely not get another extension.
What To Do With Guerreiro, Gnabry and Goretzka?
As for the three players that we have not yet discussed in any great detail, they are all squad players and not much more than that.
Raphaël Guerreiro’s big advantage is his versatility. The former Portuguese international can play full-back on either side of the back four as a holding midfielder and even help out very effectively as a playmaking number 10. However, he is not a great option for any of those positions.
Serge Gnabry was supposed to be the go-to replacement for the injured Jamal Musiala, but it did not turn out that way.
Meanwhile, Leon Goretzka had already been told at the beginning of the previous season that he was surplus to requirements at the club.
Rather than find a new team, Goretzka chose to fight for his place with the Bavarians, and to his credit, he succeeded beyond what anyone could have expected, but he is not the first choice in the side’s midfield.
Ultimately, of those last three players mentioned with expiring Bayern Munich contracts, none is key. At the same time, the club can ill afford to let all of them go on free transfers either.
With that being said, all six players with expiring Bayern Munich contracts, time is not on the Bavarians’ side as they have to decide sooner rather than later.
