Winning the World Cup is hard enough. Doing it on home soil, with the weight of a nation’s expectations, is rarer still.
In the tournament’s history, only six host nations have gone all the way and lifted the trophy in front of their own supporters.
It is a feat that gives every host a little extra hope, which is part of why the co-hosts feature so heavily in the World Cup 2026 betting & odds.
Plenty of fans following the build-up, whether through previews or a World Cup betting exchange, will know just how much home advantage can matter.
In this article, we look back at the only six host nation World Cup winners.
Host Nation World Cup Winners
Uruguay 1930
The very first World Cup, in 1930, was won by its hosts. Uruguay, already double Olympic champions, beat neighbours Argentina 4-2 in the final in Montevideo, played in front of a packed Estadio Centenario.
It set the template for what a home triumph could look like.
Uruguay remain one of only two nations to win the World Cup on their debut.
Italy 1934
Four years later, Italy made it two hosts in a row. Under the cloud of Mussolini’s regime, the Azzurri beat Czechoslovakia 2-1 after extra time in Rome to win their first title.
It was also a debut triumph, as Italy had not entered the inaugural tournament. The win marked the start of a golden period that would bring back-to-back titles.
England 1966
England’s only World Cup win came on home soil in 1966.
Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick, the only one in a final for over 55 years before Kylian Mbappe‘s in 2022, as Sir Alf Ramsey’s side beat West Germany 4-2 after extra time at Wembley.
The match remains the most famous in English football history. Bobby Moore lifted the trophy as captain.
West Germany 1974
West Germany triumphed on home soil in 1974, getting the better of a brilliant Netherlands side in the final.
Despite falling behind to an early penalty, the hosts recovered to win 2-1 in Munich, with Gerd Muller scoring the decisive goal.
Franz Beckenbauer captained the team that overcame Johan Cruyff’s much-admired Dutch outfit. It was West Germany’s second world title.

Argentina 1978
Argentina won their first World Cup as hosts in 1978, in a tournament played against a backdrop of political turmoil under military rule.
Mario Kempes, the tournament’s top scorer, struck twice as Argentina beat the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time in Buenos Aires.
The Dutch had now lost back-to-back finals to the host nation. For Argentina, it was the beginning of their World Cup story.
France 1998
The most recent host to win was France in 1998. Zinedine Zidane scored twice with his head as Les Bleus beat Brazil 3-0 in the final in Saint-Denis.
It was France’s first World Cup title, and the win, by a diverse and united squad, was celebrated across the country. No host has lifted the trophy since.

Six hosts, spread across the best part of seven decades, have managed to win on home soil. France in 1998 was the last to do it, and no host has matched the feat in the 21st century.
