SS Lazio: A Brief Insight Into Their Fairytale Season

After a disappointing campaign last season, it looks as if things are finally on the up for Lazio.

SS Lazio’s Fairytale Season

Founded 120 years ago, Lazio plays its trade in the footballing city of Rome. Many footballing fans will know that there are two well-established teams competing for glory and representing the great city of Rome. That other team is Roma. Since 1953 both have shared the iconic Stadio Olympico stadium. Over the years, fans have been divided as to who truly represents the great city of Rome.

Over the years

Recently it’s been Roma who has been competing on Europe’s elite stage, but now, it’s Lazio’s time to shine.

Simone Inzaghi, a former Lazio forward, who played for the famous “I Biancocelesti” for eleven years, has managed the side since 2016.

The last time Lazio witnessed Champions League football was in the 2007/08 season. However, after 29 games this season, Lazio currently sit second in what has been one of their best seasons to date.

As eluded to earlier, guided by Simone Inzaghi, Lazio is playing with such great passion and with a system that benefitted this team from Rome.

The key men

Italian forward Ciro Immobile currently leads the frontline in what has been such a sensational season for the 30-year-old. He is, without a doubt, one of the best forwards in Italy. Lazio heavily relies upon this man, who is the top goalscorer in the league with 29 goals.

Let’s not forget that Lazio’s midfield is stacked with real experienced, quality. Marco Parolo, Sergej Milinković-Savić and the magician that is Luis Alberto.

The tactics

Lazio like to play out from the back but are always looking to break quickly. The use of Sergej and Luis are key to Lazio’s success. It’s a must for Inzaghi that his defenders engage quickly with the midfield as the two stars in central midfield are capable of passing between the lines.

When it comes to attacking, Lazio loves to flood the box. This is where the wingbacks play into Lazio’s hands. Ciro Immobile waits until the time is right to make a run into the box, losing his man and firing the ball home. Ciro’s link-up play and ball-playing ability is second to none.

Lazio’s attack is versatile and entertaining. They can either attack from the flanks with the wingbacks or through the centre of midfield with Sergej or Luis.

It’s fair to say that Lazio has been the surprise package of this season’s Serie A. Inzaghi has implemented the perfect 3-5-2 system, which can also change in-game, and his side has been a joy to watch this season.

There’s still a chance that Lazio could win the league title, but even if they don’t, the Lazio faithful can be proud of their accomplishments this season.
