Arsenal Form: Three Reasons Behind The Recent Drop Off In Form For The Gunners

There is a visible slump in the Arsenal form at the moment.

The Gunners lost 2-1 at home to AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League yesterday, marking their third defeat in their last four matches.

The Arsenal form now keeps them nine points ahead of Manchester City, but the latter have two matches in hand.

Arsenal have floundered after coming so close to the league title, and Mikel Arteta knows it.

Should Arsenal fail to win any silverware this season, his job could very well be on the line. Here, we will discuss three reasons why the Arsenal form has suffered.

Arsenal Form: Midfielders No Longer Contributing Goals

Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice, the two defensive midfielders for Arsenal, have scored six and five goals, respectively, this season.

However, since the last week of January, they have scored only once each. The opposition teams now prepare well against their runs into the final third, which often result in shots taken at the goal from the edge of the penalty box.

There are always bodies on the line as the opposition players fling themselves into the line of the shots to block them.

This is the way most of the teams have been able to reduce the efficiency of both Rice and Zubimendi, as far as scoring goals is concerned.

Arsenal Form: The Set Piece Goals Have Dried Up

Viktor Gyokeres scored the only goal against Bournemouth from a penalty.

However, aside from the penalties, Arsenal’s much-discussed ability to score from set pieces, especially from corners, has suffered of late. This is a factor that has contributed significantly to the drop in the Arsenal form.

The Gunners have not been able to score from a corner in any of their last 10 matches across all competitions.

The opposition teams now guard against Arsenal’s tactics of crowding the space beyond the far post with three or four players by having enough personnel in that area.

Arsenal Form: Squad Depth Has Gone Against Them

Arsenal have not had a set forward line during the past two months or so.

In fact, Arsenal’s squad depth has sometimes become detrimental to them. They keep alternating between Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, neither of whom has been particularly impressive.

On the right flank, the pattern has been repeated, with Noni Madueke often starting there, and Bukayo Saka has been played out of position at times, playing as the number 10.

The quartet of Martinelli, Trossard, Saka and Madueke have scored only 34 goals between them this season so far, with only Martinelli reaching double digits.

In the number 10 position, Martin Odegaard’s injury has meant that he has played in only 30 matches this season so far.

In his absence, primarily Eberechi Eze and Kai Havertz have alternated as the number 10, but both have been impressive only in patches. Eze has scored nine goals and Havertz four, which are not notable contributions.

Hence, none of the players in Arsenal’s attack has stood out aside from, maybe, Viktor Gyokeres, who has 18 goals in 45 matches.

As a result, the Arsenal form has dropped, and thus, the Gunners run the risk of finishing another season trophyless.
