Timo Werner’s Season: Is He Performing As Expected?

Amid rumours that Chelsea would be willing to sell Timo Werner in order to sign Erling Haaland, the German international has continued to struggle to find his feet in English Football.

With a few goals, bad matches, and orders from new coach Thomas Tuchel, it seems Werner’s recent demotion to the bench deserves observation.

Werner arrived at Stamford Bridge, from RB Leipzig, in exchange for 53 million euros, his last season in the German team was excellent, which made him arrive in London with big credentials, 34 goals and 13 assists in all competitions.

He made his senior debut in a friendly match against England and at 22 he played at his first World Cup in Russia in 2018. With Germany’s elimination in the first round, his international career is not fruitful, but he has 15 goals in 37 games.

With this background, Timo Werner arrived at one of the most important teams in England. the Blues also signed important players like Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz among others. Besides that, even with Frank Lampard as a coach, the team didn’t perform well, the signings didn’t tune with the rest.

Chelsea New Signings Led to Frank Lampard Dismissal

In terms of results, they were really irregular both in the Premier League and in their other competitions. One of those who suffered the most from the team’s lack of good games was Werner himself. Within those matches, Chelsea had a solid start to the Champions League group stage, and Premier League but was eliminated on penalties against Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup.

With Lampard’s dismissal in January this year and Tuchel’s arrival, the fans renewed their hope for Werner. With a new coach and a new way of playing expected the striker to improve his performance. Unfortunately, there have been no big changes in his performances. 11 games in and just one goal whilst also missing some incredible open goal chances
. In addition to statistics, small discussions with Thomas Tuchel can draw attention in which the coach shouts at him mainly about his location on the field.

The club keeps high confidence in Werner for this season, both the coach and his teammates really trust him. In all the interviews, they highlight his effort and how important is Werner to the team.

The coach to analyses his season needs to define his future. Various information indicates that he could enter into a negotiation to take Haaland to Chelsea, or sell him to sign another striker. The analysis should define whether an irregular season is a reason enough for Chelsea to get rid of a great player who could adapt better in his second season.
