A Reflection on Vincent Kompany’s 100 Bayern Games in Charge

After the impressive 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in midweek, in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg, the Bavarians’ coach Vincent Kompany now has a round number of Bayern Munich matches behind him.

So far, it has been an impressive early part of the Belgian tactician’s tenure at the club. Here, we reflect on Kompany’s 100 Bayern games.

Kompany’s 100 Bayern Games: Many Early Doubters

After Kompany’s 100 Bayern games at the helm, everyone seems to be singing the coach’s praises and rightfully so. But that wasn’t always the case, far from it.

When he arrived to Munich in the summer of 2024, the former Manchester City centre-back was seen by many in the public to be too inexperienced a coach for Bayern.

After all, Vincent Kompany’s only coaching job at the highest level had been at Burnley, with whom he had just been relegated from the English Premier League.

On top of that, there had been an incredible level of dysfunction at Bayern Munich, which went from the boardroom to the dressing room.

How could such a young and relatively new coach navigate successfully through all of these problems? It seemed impossible.

Managers with a much more impressive CV, such as the then-recently sacked Thomas Tuchel, not to mention Carlo Ancelotti some years earlier, had tried and failed to do so.

With that in mind and the fact that none of the coaches that came after Pep Guardiola’s 2016 departure could survive two full seasons at the club, we asked early in the term and the then quite legitimate question of whether, the same fate would await Kompany as well.

Of course, it sounds quite ridiculous in retrospect.

Extraordinary Statistics

After Kompany’s 100 Bayern games, we can now safely say that he has been able to prove the doubters wrong. The team have won 76 of those competitive matches in all competitions, drawn 13 and lost only 11.

In the process, the Bavarians have scored 302 goals, conceding 101. Their points-per-match average was 2.41.

Those numbers say a lot, but of course, there is so much that they can’t express. They do not show the amazing team spirit that Kompany has helped build over the course of the nearly two years at the club so far.

They do not express the unity in the dressing room that has been lacking at Bayern for years, but the former Belgium international (who has only turned 40 years of age on April 10 of this year), has brought in early in his era in charge.

He has also given significant playing time to academy players and has made seemingly every member of the squad feel like he is being valued.

18-year-old Lennart Karl has gone from promising youth team player to senior German international in not even a full season.

The One Caveat

Yet, despite all of those positives, Bayern coaches are judged by the trophies they win, and so far, Bayern only have only won one Bundesliga title and a German Super Cup title in Kompany’s 100 Bayern games.

Last season, they lost in the quarterfinals of the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup, while having been eliminated in the Round of 16 of the German Cup.

Beating Real Madrid this term is great, especially away, but that is only one first step toward something potentially big. The future will show how long Kompany can stay at Bayern and whether or not he can shape an era.
