Yves Bissouma: Malian Midfielder Linked With Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard’s Re-Build

Gerrard replaced Sean Dyche as Aston Villa manager in November 2021 after a successful run at Rangers. Before he took over, Villa were struggling to win many matches. Gerrard has given the side a new identity and has them playing some entertaining football. The board has taken notice of this and has decided to back him in the January transfer window.

Gerrard has acted early in the transfer window, bringing his former teammate Philippe Coutinho on a six-month loan from Barcelona. Immediately after that deal, Villa have set their sights on Yves Bissouma. The Brighton midfielder doesn’t directly contribute to many goals. However, it is his defensive ability that makes him such a highly-rated midfielder. Bissouma has made 35 successful tackles and 27 interceptions in 14 appearances so far this season.

Will Brighton Let Bissouma Go?

Bissouma is one of the key reasons for Brighton’s stability in defence. The Seagulls have only conceded 20 goals in the Premier League this season. That’s less than Manchester United and Arsenal.

“We’re not a selling club at all, we don’t have to sell anybody”, said Brighton manager, Graham Potter, in a recent interview. “But you never know in this world, so you have to be a little bit aware of that”, he added. It’s clear Brighton aren’t looking to let any players go this January, but they are willing to listen to offers.

Other Targets

Aston Villa are also searching for a left-back. Gerrard has been switching between Matt Targett and Ashley Young since he took over.

19-year-old Aaron Hickey is one of their preferred targets for that position. The Scottish defender joined Bologna in 2020. Gerrard is well aware of the youngster during his time in Scotland and is said to be keen on bringing him to Villa Park.
