Arsenal’s 2026/27 Premier League season has begun with a mixture of impressive results and some early questions for Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners won their opening four league matches against Coventry City, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Sunderland before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Arsenal scored eight goals and conceded just one across those opening four matches, but Brighton exposed some of the problems that could become more noticeable as the season continues.
The Arsenal signings from the 2026 summer window have already started to play an important role in Arteta’s squad.
Christos Tzolis has started all five Premier League matches, while Ezri Konsa has quickly become an important option in defence following his move from Aston Villa. Bruno Guimaraes has also been brought in to add another high-level option to the midfield.
However, with several of the Arsenal signings still adapting to Arteta’s system, it is too early to know exactly how much of an impact the new arrivals will have over the full campaign.
The Impact of the 2026/27 Arsenal Signings
The opening weeks of the season have already provided some indication of where the summer additions have strengthened Arsenal and where there are still questions to answer.
The biggest changes have come across the attacking and midfield areas, while the arrival of Konsa has also given Arteta another experienced defensive option.
A New Option in Attack
Attack was one of the areas where Arsenal made an important addition during the summer.
Christos Tzolis joined from Club Brugge for around £34m after an impressive 2025/26 campaign in Belgium. The Greece international scored 17 league goals and provided 23 assists last season, and he was brought in following Leandro Trossard’s move to Besiktas.
Tzolis has already become one of the more regularly used Arsenal signings.
He started all five of Arsenal’s Premier League matches up to the international break, although he has yet to score in the competition. He did provide an assist in the 2-1 win over Chelsea, showing some of the creativity that made him an attractive addition for Arteta.
The winger has therefore been given plenty of opportunities to settle into his new surroundings.
Arsenal also continue to have a number of established attacking options, including Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Eberechi Eze. Eze, who joined from Crystal Palace during the previous (2025) summer window, has also given Arteta another player capable of operating in several attacking positions.
Viktor Gyokeres is another player who will remain important to Arsenal’s attack, although the Swedish striker has had a quieter start to the campaign and has had to compete with Havertz for minutes.
The Arsenal signings have therefore added more options rather than completely changing the way the attack operates.

A New Look in Midfield
Midfield is arguably the most significant area to consider when looking at the Arsenal signings.
Bruno Guimaraes arrived from Newcastle United in a major deal and was brought in to add quality, experience and versatility to Arteta’s midfield.
The Brazilian made his first Premier League start for Arsenal against Brighton, but the game did not go according to plan. He was substituted after an hour as Arsenal struggled to match Brighton’s intensity in the middle of the pitch.
That does not necessarily tell the full story of his Arsenal career, however.
Guimaraes is still adapting to a new team after several years at Newcastle, and Arteta has a number of midfield options around him.
Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice remain important parts of the midfield, while Martin Zubimendi provides another option in the deeper role. The Arsenal signings have therefore given Arteta more flexibility when deciding how to balance his midfield.
The early results suggest that this area has generally worked well, but the defeat to Brighton showed that there can still be problems when Arsenal are put under sustained pressure.
Greater Depth at the Back
Defence is another area where the Arsenal signings have changed Arteta’s options.
Ezri Konsa arrived from Aston Villa after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s more experienced defenders. His versatility means he can provide cover across the backline, which became particularly important after William Saliba suffered a long-term injury.
Konsa started against Brighton and has featured heavily during the opening weeks of the campaign. His arrival gives Arteta another experienced centre-back alongside Gabriel, William Saliba and Jurrien Timber.
Piero Hincapie is another of the Arsenal signings who has strengthened the defensive options.
After initially joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, the Ecuador international’s move was made permanent during the summer. He offers Arteta another left-footed option in defence and can also operate at left-back when required.
Illan Meslier also arrived from Leeds United on a free transfer to provide additional competition in goal.
However, the goalkeeper position has not changed completely, with David Raya remaining Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper. Meslier therefore represents more of a squad addition than an immediate change to Arteta’s starting XI.
The defensive Arsenal signings have consequently provided more depth, but Brighton’s 3-0 victory showed that even a strengthened defence can still be exposed.
Arsenal had conceded only one Premier League goal before travelling to Brighton, but the champions conceded three times in one match for the first time since December 2023.
That result does not erase the defensive improvement seen in the first four matches, but it does show that there is still work for Arteta to do.

Extra Time Notes
There is still a long way to go in Arsenal’s 2026/27 campaign, meaning it would be too early to make any final judgement on the summer arrivals.
The Arsenal signings have already changed the depth of Arteta’s squad, particularly with Tzolis becoming a regular starter and Konsa providing another experienced defensive option.
Guimaraes has also added another high-level midfielder, while Hincapie and Meslier have increased the number of options available to Arteta across the defence and goalkeeping positions.
However, the opening five Premier League matches have also shown that new players cannot immediately solve every problem.
Arsenal began the campaign with four consecutive league wins, and just one goal conceded before Brighton exposed some weaknesses in a heavy defeat. The Gunners remain near the top of the Premier League, but there will be plenty of tougher tests ahead.
The Arsenal signings have strengthened an already competitive squad, but several of them are still settling into Arteta’s system.
The next few months will therefore be important in determining whether the Arsenal signings can make the difference between simply competing for trophies and successfully defending the Premier League title.
