‘Phenomenal’ Striker Closes In On Arsenal Move To Fire Up Their Goal-Scoring Efficiency

Arsenal are starting to make serious moves in the 2025 summer transfer window to add more quality to their squad that can help provide a stronger challenge for the Premier League title.

After announcing the signing of Martin Zubimendi to add more steel to their midfield, it now appears that the Gunners are inching closer to making a blockbuster striker signing in the form of Sporting CP goal machine Viktor Gyokeres.

They have been linked with the Swedish forward for quite a bit, but a promising recent update seems to indicate that the London heavyweights are now seriously moving towards getting a deal done to add some more firepower to their frontline.

Arsenal Pushing To Complete Viktor Gyokeres Signing From Sporting CP As Personal Terms Agreed

It is now being reported by The Athletic’s reliable David Ornstein that Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign Viktor Gyokeres in the 2025 summer transfer window.

He claims that personal terms have already been agreed between the Gunners and Gyokeres, who has agreed to sign a five-year contract with them after having prioritised a move to Arsenal for quite some time now – he reportedly does not intend to report for pre-season at Sporting.

Arsenal are now in advanced talks with Sporting CP to get the deal over the line.

Even though the deal is now done, Ornstein claims that discussions are continuing between the two sides over the kind of transfer fee that the Premier League heavyweights will need to be paying for Viktor Gyokeres’ signing.

The journalist indicates that the situation is progressing towards a conclusion and that Mikel Arteta is personally pushing his upper management officials to swiftly conclude this deal before Arsenal begin their pre-season preparations for the 2025/26 season.

Is Viktor Gyokeres An Upgrade Over Arsenal’s Current Striker Options?

Arsenal had their share of struggles finding a consistent No. 9 in the 2024/25 season.

Kai Havertz was their most prolific centre-forward with 15 goals in 36 games, but missed the last chunk of the campaign with an injury.

Leandro Trossard was slotted into the centre-forward role at times as well, scoring 10 goals for them, while Mikel Merino grabbed a few goals as makeshift striker option for the Gunners as well.

However, Arsenal didn’t have a single player to score over 10 goals in the Premier League, which held them back in the title race and ultimately allowed Liverpool to go ahead to win the Premier League title.

That is why the Gunners are now aiming to sign one of the most prolific strikers in Europe. Viktor Gyokeres had an amazing 2024/25 season with Sporting CP, helping them win the Liga Portugal trophy and proving himself as a genuine goal machine by scoring 54 goals in 52 matches across all competitions.

He scored more goals than all of Arsenal’s striker options combined, proving himself as a ruthless finisher in front of goal.

Viktor Gyokeres basically blows every Arsenal forward in terms of his efficiency in front of goal, which reflects on his metrics.

The Swedish forward averaged 4.08 shot attempts, 4.77 progressive carries and 0.87 non-penalty goes per 90 minutes in the Liga Portugal last season.

This only shows how clinical he is in converting chances and how well he can also drive his side forward with dangerous forward runs.

In comparison, Havertz only averaged 2.51 shots, 0.48 non-penalty goals and 1.44 progressive carries per 90, while Trossard averaged 2.49 shots, 0.28 non-penalty goals and 2.74 progressive carries per 90 minutes as well.

Viktor Gyokeres earned a lot of praise for his heroics in the 2024/25 season. Sporting boss Rui Borges heaped his quality in the final third, praising his sheer quality by stating:

“Viktor is a game-changer, and he will continue to be, whether with us or elsewhere. His quality is undeniable; it is phenomenal.”

Arsenal seem to be serious in their pursuit of the 26-year-old forward, but it remains to be seen if a deal can be finalised before the start of the 2025/26 Premier League.
