Newcastle Will Be Strengthened by the Signing of Anthony Elanga

Newcastle United have agreed on the signing of winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest.

This is the first signing that the Magpies have completed in the ongoing transfer window. Elanga is a former Manchester United player, having spent three seasons with the Red Devils.

Newcastle finished fifth in Premier League last season and won the EFL Cup as well. They will be playing in UEFA Champions League next season. This means that Elanga will get an opportunity to feature in Europe’s premier tournament next season.

Anthony Elanga has shone for Nottingham Forest in the last two season

Elanga played in 82 matches for Nottingham Forest in the last two seasons and scored 11 goals. He also registered 20 assists in Premier League during the same period, which is among the highest in the league.

His performance contributed to Nottingham Forest finishing seventh in the Premier League last season. Forest missed out on a place in next season’s Champions League narrowly, but impressed a lot of people with their performance.

Elanga made his mark while playing on the right flank, as his ability to play crosses into the box stood out. He kept beating opposition full-backs with his speed and got into the opposition penalty box frequently.

The 23-year-old Swedish winger’s stint at Manchester United was somewhat disappointing, but he gained some valuable experience there. Manchester United must have been ruing releasing Elanga, as the latter stood out among the wingers in the Premier League with his string of performances.

Newcastle United Will Be Bolstered With Elanga’s Inclusion

The Magpies already have strong attack comprising of the likes of Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy and Bruno Guimaraes.

Undoubtedly, Elanga’s inclusion will bolster their attack further. However, Elanga will have to contend with Murphy for a spot on the right flank.

Murphy himself registered 14 assists last season and was one of Newcastle’s most consistent players overall.

Hence, replacing him in the playing XI is not going to be easy for Elanga. Still, the Swede’s consistency means that he might be able to get some game time for the Magpies as well.

How Much Did He Cost?

Elanga has reportedly attracted a transfer fee of £55 million.

Nottingham had bought him for £15 million from Manchester United two seasons ago. Therefore, the current bit of business has turned out to be a very profitable one for Forest.

Once again, Manchester United seem to have been on the receiving end in the transfer market, as another club has reaped the benefit by selling a former Red Devils player.

Newcastle are already one of the strongest teams in England, and Elanga’s signing will make then even more well-rounded.

However, Nottingham Forest, who have already had to deal with the departure of striker Rory Delap, will be a poorer team for the absence of Elanga.

It now remains to be seen how much the Swedish winger is able to contribute to the cause of his new team in the upcoming season.
