In a statement released by Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, he appears to be furious at the decision for him to leave Paris-Saint Germain, following the arrival of Lucas Chevalier.
As a result, he has been left to decide his future and weigh up opportunities presented to him from both the blue and the red side of Manchester. But where does Donnarumma believe his next steps lie?
Gianluigi Donnarumma’s Statement
Following such success with Paris-Saint Germain this season, winning trophies including the French league title and the Champions League, it would be wise to assume that the PSG hierarchy would like to continue in the same vein and only add quality to the current crop of players rather than mitigate departures.
However, this is not the case, with Donnarumma indicating that “Someone has decided I can no longer be a part of the group and contribute to the team’s success.” The Italian went on to say that he was “disappointed and disheartened” by the decision.
Whilst the nature of the departure has been deemed unsavoury by Donnarumma, he took time in his statement to thank the fans of PSG, noting the special bond he had with them. “I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights, and, of you, who made me feel at home”, he said.
Transfer Options
Rumours circulating around Donnarumma’s next potential destination have been frequent this summer.
Some may suggest that links to Manchester United have been more significant for the player as they look to add to their goalkeeping department.
However, Manchester City have most recently taken the lead in the race. Various reports have indicated that the Blues have agreed personal terms for the player, whilst others indicate a deal has been agreed.
The Blues have already bolstered their goalkeeping department with two new names this summer. Chelsea’s Marcus Bettinelli has arrived to replace Scott Carson as the third choice, whilst Burnley’s James Trafford has returned to the club amidst uncertainty regarding the future of German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
Whilst it may be deemed rare for a club, especially of Manchester City’s calibre, to bring in three new goalkeepers in one summer, a move for Donnarumma would be sensible for Pep Guardiola’s side.
First-choice keeper Ederson has previously reportedly wanted a departure from the club, and with his contract expiry on the horizon, this brings potential for change at this current stage, should the right opportunity present itself.

Attributes
Upon potentially joining Manchester City, Donnarumma is a goalkeeper who brings experience and quality, having made his professional debut at such a young age.
Although he is only 26, Donnarumma has just concluded his tenth season since he made his professional debut for AC Milan in the Coppa Primavera, aged 16.
Throughout this period, the player has also obtained 74 caps for his national team. He has also been made captain of the Azzurri. Although success has been varied for Italy throughout his time in goal, the goalkeeper has consistently retained plaudits for his performances, despite immense struggles.
The Italian also stands at 6’4″ and is huge in stature, yet he displays a dynamism in goal that allows him to be quick in the dive, showing admirable reflexes.
Throughout his time playing for PSG and AC Milan, Donnarumma has also obtained experience with the ball at his feet, playing out from the back consistently with some of the world’s best defenders, including Marquinhos, which is something Pep Guardiola may look for in a goalkeeper.
Donnarumma’s departure from Paris Saint-Germain appears to be a messy process that indicates that the club and the player are not aligned in their decision.
However, one decision that appears to be conclusive now is that the Italian looks to be joining Manchester City in a move that should help Pep Guardiola’s side further challenge for trophies and success.
