Charlotte FC’s Unexpected Climb: Contender or Hot Streak?

After appearing to be bound to the play in-game early in the season, the Charlotte FC hot streak of late has highlighted glaring problems the team has seemingly overcome. Thanks to their schedule and red-hot play, the corrections have resulted in an unexpected climb, making them possible contenders for hardware.

Charlotte FC Rises Through the Eastern Conference

It’s no secret that the Eastern Conference is deeper in terms of true contenders compared to the West, which has only around three teams viewed as contenders. Charlotte was not viewed as a true contender due to their inconsistent play against top teams, but things have appeared to change for the Queen City’s team.

Charlotte hasn’t been considered a top contender, as they have been around the eight seed for the majority of the season. Now this raises the question: contender or hot streak?

Start of Charlotte FC Hot Streak or Close to Cooling off?

Since July, Charlotte has been one of, if not the hottest team in MLS play. In that time, they have had one draw and seven straight wins leading into their next game against New England, a struggling club. With no signs of cooling off, this team can make a run for a top-three seed if the teams ahead of them slip just a little bit.

After New England, their toughest games are Inter Miami and Philadelphia Union, who are solidified MLS Cup contenders as well as Supporters Shield contenders in Philadelphia.

With just two of the better teams the East has to offer left on their schedule, it allows Charlotte to get their wins against weaker teams while testing themselves twice before the playoffs.

Can they be a threat to the MLS Cup?

If one were asked in June, few would have expected this team to be a contender. With a win against either Philadelphia or Miami, the team would go a long way to combat naysayers. Not only for having beaten a top team, but turn a fantastic run into a remarkable one.

When they play stiffer competition, they will tactically not be able to play as they have. A bump in the road should be expected as they work through these scenarios with the aforementioned Philadelphia and Miami sides.

No matter who they play in the first round, the reality is that they will be outmatched—at least on paper. Orlando, Miami, and Columbus are all viewed as stronger teams, have been consistent against other quality sides, and for the most part have better playoff pedigree.

Though Charlotte FC hot streak has been fun to watch, it is hard to imagine that it will go any further than a first-round exit in the three-game series that they could very well have the advantage in.
