The Bayern Munich Winning Streak At 16: What It Means for the Season as a Whole

The Bavarians have truly gotten off to a historic start to the season, with the Bayern Munich winning streak now up to 16 games in all competitions. This makes them the only team in Europe without a defeat so far this term.

Two wins ago, Bayern broke a 33-year-old record set by AC Milan at the beginning of the 1992/93 season, as far as consecutive victories at the beginning of the season in Europe’s top leagues go.

The Bayern Munich Winning Streak: How Far Can It Take Them This Term?

Even though the Bayern Munich winning streak is certainly impressive, the question, of course, is what it can do for the team in the long scheme of things this season? After all, we are only in November of a season that gets decided around March, April, and May.

Another question is, what effect will the inevitable, eventual end of the Bayern Munich winning streak have on the team psychologically, once it is over? Will they use the momentum of this early form to propel them to a historic season, or will they let it evaporate?

The Historical Precedent for an Unbeaten Domestic Season Exists

Of course, the Bayer Leverkusen performance from two seasons ago shows that going through a Bundesliga season unbeaten is no longer impossible, but it remains highly unlikely.

Particularly because Xabi Alonso’s former side played Europa League football that season, which, of course, is far less stressful than being in the Champions League and competing with Europe’s elite regularly.

Bayern Munich’s Lofty Expectations

Furthermore, as impressive as an unbeaten domestic term might be for Bayern, they also hope to finally be able to compete for the Champions League title as well, after a five-year drought.

The fact that they also haven’t lifted the German domestic cup in five years also makes that competition more lucrative than it otherwise would be.

In other words, Bayern are at the very least, looking to credibly compete for all three major honours this season.

Of those three titles, only that of the Bundesliga is an absolute must, but there has to at least be a credible challenge for the other two as well.

The Vincent Kompany Effect

39-year-old Belgian coach Vincent Kompany has succeeded where some of his illustrious predecessors, such as Thomas Tuchel, or long before that even the great Carlo Ancelotti, have failed. Kompany managed to get control of the dressing room.

Even more importantly, he got this team of stars to buy into his way of doing things. At a press conference early on in his stint with the Bavarians, something came up about how long Kompany thought he could stay in the Munich hotseat.

He answered, “Why not seven years?”, to which the journalists in the press room laughed. Now, no one is laughing any longer at the suggestion that the coach could shape an era with the Bavarian giants. His contract was just extended until 2029.

Even so, it is of course far from certain that he will remain there that long, or that this season will be a historic one. But the Bayern Munich winning streak was certainly a good step in a positive direction.
