A Scott McTominay goal helped the hosts win the Scotland vs Denmark fixture 4-2 in a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park in Glasgow on Tuesday, November 18. The Scottish team thus qualified for the 2026 World Cup, which will be their first since 1998.
The Scott McTominay goal was the first one scored by Scotland on Tuesday. They scored two goals during injury time, as Denmark were reduced to 10 men. Spain qualified for the World Cup comfortably by finishing at the top of the group, but Scotland secured second place with their victory in the Scotland vs Denmark game.
Scott McTominay Goal Showed His Class as an Attacking Player
The Scott McTominay goal was a brilliant bicycle-kick to give Scotland an early lead. McTominay’s goal was his 14th international one in 66 caps for Scotland.
McTominay, a former Manchester United player, signed for Napoli last year, and his career has seen a turnaround since then. He has scored 17 goals in 50 matches for Napoli so far, which is a very decent return for a player with defensive abilities.
McTominay won the Serie A title with Napoli and also the individual award of the “Most Valuable Player” last season. The Scot is now one of the most coveted players in Serie A. Scotland’s qualification for the World Cup will further improve his profile as a player.
McTominay’s stint with Manchester United lasted for eight seasons, but he was able to score only 29 goals in 255 matches for the Red Devils. He was surprisingly deemed to be redundant by the club and was allowed to leave.
United’s loss has certainly been Napoli’s gain, as McTominay has flourished under Antonio Conte. He has been given more attacking freedom by the Italian manager. McTominay has Kevin De Bruyne beside him at the moment, which should further increase his productivity as a manager.

Is McTominay in His Prime?
McTominay will turn 29 next month, which means that he is pretty much in his prime as a footballer. He should still have a few years left at the top-flight football and will be looking to make the most of it. His contract with Napoli runs until 2028.
Playing in major tournaments for his national team is an added incentive. He has played in a couple of European Championships so far, but will play in his first World Cup in 2026. McTominay scored a goal at Euro 2024, but it now seems quite ironic that he played as a centre-back in Scotland’s three-man defence at Euro 2020.
He has evolved a lot as a player during the last few years and his opportunism in the final third has grown to become one of his key assets as a player. McTominay will go into the 2026 World Cup as his country’s best player and best hope as well.
Scotland were eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup in 1998 after having given Brazil a tough fight in the opening match of the tournament. They will hope to come up with an improved showing next year in the tournament in North America.
