Liverpool Draw Against Tottenham Hotspur: Three Reasons Behind The Poor Liverpool Form

A 1-1 Liverpool draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, March 15, at Anfield left them with 49 points in 30 matches and in the fifth position in the Premier League table.

As of now, the Liverpool draw means that they are still by no means certain to ensure qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season.

The Liverpool form has now seen them split points with relegation-threatened Tottenham Hotspur, and they are five points behind third-placed arch-rivals Manchester United, who have finished behind them in almost every recent season.

In this article, we will look at three reasons behind the current Liverpool run.

Liverpool Draw Against Tottenham Hotspur: Lack Of Prolific Goal-Scorers

There are not too many prolific goal-scorers in the Liverpool squad this season. Only two players have reached double digits in terms of goals scored for Liverpool this season: Hugo Ekitike and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Ekitike and Szoboszlai have scored 16 and 10 goals, respectively, which means that the latter has only just reached double digits after his free-kick that he scored against Spurs.

Moreover, Szoboszlai has also scored several goals from free-kicks. That means that aside from Ekitike, all other Liverpool players have found it difficult to score from open play.

Mohamed Salah, who usually tops the charts for the Reds, has scored nine goals so far, including the goals he has scored from the penalty spot.

Liverpool Draw Against Tottenham Hotspur: Teams Sitting Deep Against The Reds

The Liverpool draw with Tottenham once again pointed to the fact that most teams have sat deep against them this season after they won the Premier League title last season.

They no longer give Mohamed Salah the space he craves inside the opposition half. Until the end of last season, Salah typically used to get more space and time in the final third, which allowed him to play lateral passes to his fellow forwards,  which used to be a crucial element in Liverpool’s game.

Salah has not provided too many assists to Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo this season.

In fact, the Egyptian has only seven assists to his credit this season so far, whereas he had 23 last season, and this has been a major area of concern for Arne Slot’s men.

Moreover, Wirtz found it difficult to break open the opposition defence in the first half of the season. However, his game has picked up in the second half of the campaign, with his passing becoming more adventurous.

Liverpool Draw Against Tottenham Hotspur: Leaky Defence Conceding Too Many Goals

A porous defence has contributed to the Liverpool draw with Tottenham, as they conceded a goal late on in the game once again, as they have let in 40 goals in 30 league matches.

Liverpool has a goal difference of plus nine after 30 matches in the Premier League this season. In comparison to that, Arsenal and Manchester City have a goal difference of plus 39 and plus 32, respectively.

The above piece of statistics is enough to demonstrate how far behind Liverpool has been of the two best teams in the league.

That is a major difference and explains the poor Liverpool form perfectly. Virgil van Dijk’s form has been ordinary by his standard this season, and he has not had much support from his defensive partners either.

The season can still be salvaged by qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, but it is not going to be an easy task for the Reds, as the Liverpool draw against Tottenham was another grave reminder in that regard.
