Liverpool’s Only Hope: Forget A Top Four Finish, Only Champions League Success Can Save Liverpool’s Season

Champions League success may be Liverpool’s only hope to save this season. This could also save Arne Slot’s job.

Liverpool’s form has been unacceptable throughout the entire season. After winning the Premier League last season by a comfortable 10 points, they have put up a woeful defence of their Premier League title crown.

Now sitting outside the Premier League top four, Champions League success may be the only thing that can salvage Liverpool’s season.

Liverpool’s Premier League Top Four Hopes Are Fading Fast

Liverpool’s form in the Premier League is far short of the level expected for a club of their stature.

After winning the Premier League comfortably last season, they spent almost £450 million on adding quality to an already strong squad.

The expectation was that Liverpool would push on from last season’s title win. Instead, they have fallen miles off the level they have set in previous years and are in danger of missing out on Champions League football.

Liverpool have repeatedly struggled against teams sitting in a low block this season, and manager Arne Slot has not found the answers to this problem.

By pushing more players forward in an attempt to break down compact defences, Liverpool have left themselves exposed in transition and conceded crucial goals as a result, which in turn has cost them points in games they were expected to win.

They have been unable to counter this issue and adapt their style to combat this problem, as their football has been slow and lethargic.

The physicality of the Premier League this season has caught Liverpool out. They have been outrun in 27 of their 31 Premier League games and have now suffered 10 Premier League defeats already this season.

This has been a major issue throughout the entire Premier League season for Liverpool, and missing out on a Premier League top four finish is now a realistic outcome.

Why Champions League Success Must Now Be Liverpool’s Only Priority

Champions League success should now be the main priority this season for Liverpool and Arne Slot.

Their form in the Premier League has been below par, but they have shown better performances in this season’s Champions League. Strong away performances at Inter Milan and Marseille gave Liverpool hope in a poor campaign.

Their recent victory over Galatasaray at Anfield had many people in football likening that performance to the Liverpool of old. High pressing, high intensity and sharp, decisive football throughout the game gave Liverpool hope that Champions League success is not out of the question, regardless of their underwhelming season.

They face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals after the international break, and that is a daunting task. The reigning Champions League winners disposed of Chelsea in the previous round with minimal fuss in an 8-2 aggregate win.

The French outfit knocked Liverpool out of last season’s Champions League on penalties, so Liverpool understand the size of the challenge.

However, getting revenge on this PSG side and a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League would add a major boost in confidence that Liverpool can go on to win their seventh European title.

Champions League Or Bust For Liverpool

Although Liverpool remain in with a chance of a Premier League top four finish and are in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, their priority must lie in Champions League success.

The Premier League top four finish is an uphill task now, with the amount of points they need to close the gap and their performance levels in the Premier League.

The FA Cup could offer some success, but an away tie at Manchester City is a significant hurdle given Liverpool’s poor record against Premier League opposition this season.

Liverpool have to win the Champions League to save their season. Success is demanded at the Reds, and Champions League glory would give them a major trophy and, more importantly, qualification into next season’s competition.

Liverpool must prioritise their Champions League run over a Premier League top four finish to save their season, and for Arne Slot, his job.
