Florian Wirtz’s Switzerland masterclass saw the German midfielder score a brace to snatch a 4-3 win for Germany against the Swiss on Friday, as the Germans came from behind twice to secure victory.
Florian Wirtz’s Switzerland masterclass saw the midfielder take his goal tally for Die Mannschaft to 10 goals in 38 matches.
More importantly, the German playmaker showed where things are going wrong with him for his club, Liverpool.
Florian Wirtz’s Switzerland Masterclass: Midfielder Back In The Goals And Assists
Florian Wirtz’s Switzerland masterclass consisted of two goals scored from distance with a couple of wonderful shots. He also played a delightful through ball to Serge Gnabry for the latter to score Germany’s second goal.
The key thing in this regard was the time Wirtz had to take the shots and play the pass. Slow-paced German attacks enabled him to have enough time to display his creativity and ability on the ball.
He does not usually get the same time while playing for Liverpool, as the intense, fast-paced Premier League does not allow much time on the ball.
Moreover, Wirtz started as the No.10 in Germany’s 4-2-3-1, while, for Liverpool, he starts on the left flank or even as one of the two forwards.
As a result, Florian Witz’s Switzerland masterclass shows what Arne Slot needs to do to get the best out of his creative Germany midfielder.

Florian Wirtz’s Switzerland Masterclass: Liverpool Need To Continue To Rely On His Creativity
If Wirtz is to succeed at Liverpool, he can do so only by having enough freedom, just as he does for Germany.
Wirtz has already improved his performance considerably in the second half of the season, as compared to the first, by being more expansive and carefree in his approach for Liverpool.
Just as Mohamed Salah has been the primary creative outlet for the Reds for the better part of the last decade, Wirtz has to develop into one if he is to make his signing for the club a success.
However, the conundrum is that Liverpool already has the high-performing Dominik Szoboszlai.
The Hungarian midfielder has a different style from Wirtz and is more suited to the heavy-metal football professed by Jurgen Klopp, Arne Slot’s predecessor at Liverpool.
If Wirtz is to thrive at Anfield, Liverpool will have to settle into playing a slow-tempo game, which will not force their German to part with the ball quickly.
They have already done that to a considerable extent, but the Anfield fan base is getting impatient and seemingly prefers the high-energy football that used to entertain them when Klopp was in charge.
However, one cannot have it both ways, and the job for Slot is to choose in this regard.
He cannot give in to the demands of the crowd, especially now that Salah is about to exit the club.
As for Florian Wirtz’s Switzerland masterclass, it showed that a different approach is needed to make him thrive.
However, for that to happen, Szoboszlai will have to play on the right and Cody Gakpo on the left with Hugo Ekitike upfront, but that is something that Slot will have to debate and make a decision on, as Florian Wirtz’s Switzerland masterclass throw another spanner in the works for the Dutch manager.
