England’s Form: Thomas Tuchel’s Concerns Increased After Two Disappointing Friendlies

England’s form is hardly inspiring at the moment.

After sailing through their qualification campaign, Thomas Tuchel’s men have largely been unimpressive in their two most recent international friendlies.

England’s form has seen them draw against Uruguay and then lose 1-0 against Japan. The Three Lions will play their next set of friendlies in June before the 2026 World Cup begins.

England’s Form: A Lot Of Question Marks After Poor March International Break

England’s form on home soil did not inspire their supporters, to say the least. Players like Cole Palmer and Phil Foden failed to impress, while others like Harry Kane, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka did not play.

Not to mention, Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was not called up to the squad of 35. Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, the England No.10 position remains a concern for Tuchel, which apparently had many suitors until recently.

However, as the World Cup approaches, the form of Palmer, Foden and Morgan Rogers remains uninspiring.

As of now, Jude Bellingham should perhaps start as the England No.10 in the 4-2-3-1 formation at the 2026 World Cup.

It was quite concerning that in the England vs Japan match, the Three Lions were often outrun by the visitors, and their best chances in the match were shots taken from distance by the likes of Elliot Anderson, Lewis Hall and Bellingham.

Wingers Anthony Gordon and Jarrod Bowen were also tested, but failed to have much of an impact. As of now, Anderson seems to be the only English player who has done justice to his selection in those two friendlies.

England’s Form Throws Up Several Selection Dilemmas

Tuchel will have to decide whether he should have Alexander-Arnold or Ben White as the right-back.

He will also have to decide whether to take Phil Foden or Eberechi Eze for the attacking midfield role, and the decision whether he should take either Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Dominic Solanke to the World Cup.

Players like Alexander-Arnold and Danny Welbeck, overlooked by Tuchel for the matches against Uruguay and Japan, should be there in the fray if their performances during the last couple of months of the season remain alright.

Tuchel will know very well that not qualifying for the last four at the 2026 World Cup will be seen as a failure on his part.

Hence, he should be geared up to make his team perform better in the two friendlies in June against New Zealand and Costa Rica.

England have consistently reached the latter stages of major tournaments under Gareth Southgate, Tuchel’s predecessor.

Anything other than an improvement upon that will not be deemed a success, and Tuchel will know that all too well.

Unless England’s form improves, they will not be in a position to contend for their second World Cup title this summer.

There have been some reservations against making a foreigner the manager of the national team.

Tuchel’s inability to make his team perform well will act as further fuel for the opinions against him and will put his job at serious risk ahead of his long-term future as England head coach.
